Witness Appeal After Island Cyclist Seriously Injured
Wednesday, 21st November, 2007 at 11:50 am, Isle of Wight
Each week, we receive many press releases from the Police, we don’t always feel they are relevant to our readers, however, this one is an exception. Please read on and if you have any info, get in touch on the numbers below.
Witnesses are being sought by officers from the Shanklin Roads Policing Unit after a pedal cyclist was seriously injured near Blackwater.
At about 11.23am Friday, November 16, a 58-year-old Shanklin man came off his pedal cycle on the A3020 Blackwater Hollow Road between Blackwater junction and Sandy Lane.
A 47-year-old Sandown man, who was driving a Mercedes refuse lorry, operated by Island Waste Services, stopped at the scene.
Officers from the Roads Policing Unit at Shanklin are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“This is a busy junction, and I am certain there would have been witnesses to the incident. Because they saw the lorry driver had stopped, they might have continued on their way. If that is the case, we need to speak to anyone who saw what happened,” said Sergeant Paul Bailey.
The injured cyclist was taken to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, with serious head and facial injuries. On Saturday, November 17, he was transferred to Southampton General Hospital, where he remains in a serious, but stable condition.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Operation Mirage at Shanklin Roads Policing Unit on 0845 045 45 45 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
