Winter Gardens Promoter Job Filled

Thursday, 14th February, 2008 at 5:14 pm, Isle of Wight

Winter GardensWe’ve heard that the job of the Winter Garden’s promotions and booking and admin post has been filled by David Edwards, who currently lives in Birmingham, but plans to move to Cowes with his partner, who was originally from the Island.

You may well remember the role, it’s the one that was advertised a month or so ago (using our tax pounds) only to have the role chopped around and reduced to a 22 hours a week job, in return for £10,000.

We understand that 50 people applied for the job over the two advertising rounds and that ten people were interviewed last Monday.

We’ve heard that David has his own promotions company, but are unsure if he’ll be bringing it to the Island.

He’s due to start the role on 21st or 22nd Feb, and we wish him the best of luck.

The Winter Gardens has the potential to become one of the foremost attractions of the south of the Island. Let’s hope it fulfills it.

What about the other applicants
We’re somewhat surprised that some of the best-suited candidates weren’t even contacted to say they weren’t shortlisted, never mind interviewed - despite making many calls to John Farrant, they didn’t receive a reply.

That’s no surprise to us, we’ve left phone messages for John Farrant (there’s very little option when he never answers the phone) that have taken him over eight days to return … and the reply finally came via a fax - how quaint!

It as been standard practice in business for a long time not to notify candidates that they have not been shortedlisted. What concerns me more is the implication that the post / application process was rigged. I am curious as to what evidence there is that the ‘best-suited candidates weren’t shortlisted’.

I think you’re reading more into this than was intended.

We are not implying it was rigged at all. We’re sure that the successful applicant will do the job well - he sounds very experienced.

We were however, surprised that some of the local talent - some who have bags of experience in this field were not even shortlisted.

It just seemed extremely rude to us that a succession of phone calls made by one applicant were ignored and not even returned.

Mind you, it took several calls and almost a week for John Farrant to call us back with details we requested about filling the post, so once again it’s not surprising!

We emailed John Farrant on the 31st January, and have not had an acknowledgement.
