Wightlink WiFi: Not Just Yet

Monday, 14th April, 2008 at 8:21 pm, Isle of Wight

Wight WiFi: Not Just YetDespite reports in many other publications that Wight Link are about to offer broadband access on their ferries, we’d advise you to not get too excited just yet.

Those who read the news wires correctly rather than just churn the press releases, will have realised that the access is for ‘captain and crew only’ at the moment.

Andrew Willson, Wightlink’s chief executive said “By equipping our ferries with always-on, high-speed broadband technology from Moovera Networks, we’re able to ensure our captains and crew have instant access to online resources throughout the voyage”,

“We’re also laying the foundation for public Wi-Fi hotspot services as we continually seek ways to improve the passenger experience.”

We’re waiting to hear back from Wightlink as to exactly when the Wi-Fi service will become available to the general public and will let you know once we do.

I’m in paris at the moment and i travelled across with LD Lines which offer onboard wifi. Unfortunately though it doesn’t work with Vista. So i could connect to the wifi but i couldn’t get the sign in page on internet explorer to start browsing.

Was it free to use the WiFi?

  3. Garth Says:

So captain and crew will be surfing the ‘net whilst sailing across one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world?

i’m aboard a camel crossing the gobi desert at the moment.

luckily i have a satellite-enabled broadband connection to keep me in touch with ventnor news.

  5. simon Says:

To Garth - Yes, surfing while sailing could be dangerous : )

In their info WightLink say that they’re also using it to feedback the boats position via GPS.

  6. Garth Says:

GPS would be useful I suppose? I did a similar exercise with my GPS receiver a few weeks back on the RedJet.

Hey Simon, No it wasn’t free to use. I didn’t find out how much it was though because they told me to check to see if i could get it working on Vista before i bought a card to use.
