Weston Manor: The Background: Podcast
Monday, 17th March, 2008 at 6:19 pm, Isle of Wight
In the middle of January we took ourselves over to the West of Wight to see Chris & Hilary Jarman in Totland.
They, and a number of other West Wight residents, were becoming ever-more concerned over the potential uses of Weston Manor, as the Real World Trust proposed using it as an alcohol and drugs rehabilitation centre, with - let’s be generous - what appeared as minimal consultation with locals.
We’ve split the half hour recording into three sections, where Chris provides huge amount of detail, not only laying out the issues for the locals, but also what appears to be confusing inconsistencies between the council and the RWT, such as the lack of request for planning permission for a change of use on the building.
In the time between the recordings and now, you may have seen that The Real Trust pulled out of the Weston Manor project citing problems. Those members of the public who attended the last meeting between the Real World Trust and Council official were stunned when there appeared to be significant misunderstandings between the two of them, as to the planning permission required on the site. By coincidence, the CP have also covered The Real World Trust today as well.
Meeting on Tuesday evening
There’s a public meeting this Tuesday evening, where there’s going to be a lot of discussion as to what the Weston Manor can now be used for. Everyone will be welcome we hear.

“the Real World Trust proposed using it as an alcohol and drugs rehabilitation centre”

haven’t had time to listen to the recording but isn’t a rehabilitation centre a good thing?!
i’m surprised that there seems to be a lot of alcoholism on the island; i never noticed it when i was a kid but perhaps it was there.
p.s. asda is selling jameson irish whiskey for £9 until the weekend but having googled to see if therre’s a branch on the island, it appears not.
but eggy from newport longs for the day when there’ll be one.

“I hope they consider the Isle of Wight as a location for one of their new stores. Everyone you ask over here would love an Asda as our options for shopping (and just about everything) are restricted by the expensive duopoly that operate the ferries.”

“isn’t a rehabilitation centre a good thing?!” - I don’t think there’s an argument that they are.
From chatting to Chris (and it is worth listening to the recordings to full understand the position - more later today) it’s the proposed location that caused local confusion - especially as one of the only local buildings to its remote location was a pub!
Their view was a building in their town would be far more appropriate.
More recordings later.
