Ventnor Library’s Reading Group met at the St Boniface Arms this week to discuss the works of Graham Greene.
Our next books will be Clare Morrall’s Astonishing Splashes of Colour and C J Sansom’s Winter in Madrid next.
Here are some of the comments that came out of the discussion about Graham Greene.
Rather bleak—his take on the human condition is quite cynical — I wonder if that reflects his own life?
You can see parallels in society today—the sense of isolation and corporate indifference to the individual
A fine writer—some of the works are rather dated but the style is as literate now as when first published
“A sort of life” - autobiography very interesting and having read it I want to read more of the works—I was rather put off by “England Made Me” which he regarded as one of his favourites and I found confusing
His work is obviously informed by his life. His descriptions of place are good—you feel the heat, sweat and dust of Sierra Leone in “Heart of the matter” ….
“Brighton Rock” is just as relevant today as when written - Pinky the young psychopath who kills without compunction … compunction ….
