Ventnor In The Guardian
Monday, 7th January, 2008 at 4:37 pm, Isle of Wight
If you’re a Guardian reader, you may well have been surprised to see Ventnor’s beach beaming out at you from the pages of the colour supplement, recommending all of their readers to Move to Ventnor.
Overall the article was incredibly positive about Ventnor - in fact, it couldn’t really have sounded better, receiving the ultimate accolade in the property-obsessed times that we live in, “I tell you, if I had any inheritance, this is where I’d buy my little hideaway.”
Surprised in the way it described Ventnor as “prim, middle-class” - don’t recognise that about Ventnor in the slightest and it failed to point out the obvious and missed out the vital bohemian influence in town.
For us, it wasn’t all smiles - after the paper’s request for info was highlighted on the forum, we wrote to them with tonnes of background on the area, some of which appeared in the article.
Hugely disappointed that they didn’t credit us, shows a lack on integrity on their part. Apparently it’s not unusual action for the Guardian - they did it to us about two years ago in an article about the Island, and explicitly asked us for information - which they used - and didn’t credit. Pleased to see that NatureNet/Matt & Cat got a mention though.
As to why they didn’t mention one of the most popular, vibrant local blogs in the UK (thanks to you readers) in the piece where it’s based, can only be guessed at
All is not lost, as anyone who searches for Ventnor on Google is going to find the Blog as the third result anyway - Yipee!

You _can_ get different results from Google, which, in the trade, is called the Google-dance (bizarre name I know). It normally settles itself down … let’s hope it decides to have VB at least on the third position
Here’s the grab of what I get …
