Transition Island: Official Report
Friday, 12th October, 2007 at 7:20 pm, Isle of Wight
We held the first Transition Island public meeting last night (Thursday 11/10/07) at the Riverside Centre and over 65 people attended. It was a resounding success with energetic discussion and volunteers stepping forward to drive the project onwards. The decision was taken near unanimously to adopt the Transition Towns model for the whole Island, which does not stop the model being adopted for individual towns or villages as well.
The Island needs to plan for oil price rises as soon as possible. These rises were predicted many years ago to start between 2006 and 2012.
They will dramatically affect ferry prices and therefore food and other products brought over from the mainland, AND will isolate the Island by reducing commuting and ‘exporting’ our own products. Globally, they will change our use of transport, plastics, pharmaceuticals and the ways we grow & distribute food.
Transition Island is a Community Action project which will encourage rather than compete with other similar initiatives. It will foster the idea of everybody on the Island doing a little bit, rather than waiting for unknown experts to do it for us. This gives us the best opportunity to develop locally what we actually need for the Island.
Future meetings of Transition Island will be advertised to the email list we have started. We hope to develop a website soon and would appreciate any offers of help to do this. In the meantime, people wanting to make contact can email to TransitionIsland (at) aldermoor-farm (dot) co (dot) uk

Hello Vav
Who are ‘we’ and how do I join?
I have a project I need to speak with you about. I’m going to be working on it over half term. Maybe you would like to come and see it. It’s green and it will be called The Ark. I need your help.

[...] It was interesting to see that there was a really wide range of people there, which also spanned the age spectrum - each bringing their own valuable experience and areas of expert knowledge. One thing uniting them was the desire to start planning for a better, more sustainable future. While the initial focus was concerns with quite how people would live their lives without an oil supply - which has been floated as close as 5 years away - the group discussions opened up to the wider range of subjects. Lots of good, positive ideas came out, which are being summarised and published on VB. [...]
