17, Mar 2010 in Health, Island-wide, Law & Order, Newport, News, Roads, Town Council
Thanks to Newport Parish Council for send this in to VB. We’d be happy to receive articles and press releases from other Island parish councils as well – Ed
Newport Parish Council has been approached by a number of residents concerned about the seemingly unnecessary use of sirens, particularly at weekends.
Although the parish council did not wish to make any criticism of the excellent work carried out by the emergency services, it was felt this needed further investigation. Cllr Craven, as lead Member, arranged a meeting with Chris Smith Head of Ambulance and Dean Haward, Station Manager, Fire and Rescue. Kevin Fripp Head of the Police Driving Standards was unable to attend but supplied his guidelines.

Whether the road survives until the end of March (when a council meeting has been called to discuss it) is anyone’s guess.

Extent of Damage A Pothole Can Cause
18, Jan 2010 in Isle of Wight Council, News, Roads, Wroxall
Following our earlier article about reporting potholes, we received the following email from VB reader, Jill Dennis.
As you can see from the photos below that Jill has sent us, the damage to her tyre after hitting a pothole on an Island road is pretty scary.
She tells us that although the picture of the pothole by the Donkey Sanctuary shows it just after it was filled, not surprisingly given the sub-zero weather we experienced a couple of weeks ago, it is deteriorating again.
Report a Pothole With Fix My Street
18, Jan 2010 in Island-wide, Isle of Wight Council, News, Roads
Thanks to VB friend and contributor, Wendy Varley, for this great reminder about how to report pot holes. Ed
Anyone driving around the Isle of Wight over the last week will have noticed that as the ice has receded some wheel-busting new potholes have popped up pretty much overnight.
Not only that, but with the meltwater making them look like innocent puddles, they’re very hard to spot.
