No sooner had we started looking, when this spectacular shot by Julian Winslow of the gorgeous Keri Highland, singer songwriter from the US, jumped out of the page at us.

It’s hard not to choose VB Flickr Group member Oblivion Head every week for Picture of the Week award, we’re always so impressed with his shots.
It’s been a while since he received the award, so time to heap some praise on him for this gorgeous shot (see below) taken in Newport just last week.

Did anyone spot the amazing red sky earlier in the week?
It was absolutely incredible and we’re not sure why we didn’t go outside with our camera. Luckily for us, VB Flickr Group member Garth of Wight did and managed to capture this spectacular shot of a heron perched on a roof top in Newport.

We’re sure you’ll agree it’s a fabulous shot, like many of the others in the VB Flickr Pool.
Do check out the VB Flickr Pool, there are some brilliant shots from around the Island.

Artists and Makers Sale This Saturday
26, Jan 2010 in Art, News, Photography, Pottery, Sponsored Feature, What's On
Sponsored Feature
This coming weekend brings a chance to meet local Island artists and perhaps pick up a bargain at the Cowes ‘Artists and Makers Sale’.
This will be the fourth Artists and Makers event, which takes place at the Regatta Centre in Cowes.
Over the course of two days there’ll be an opportunity to meet ten exhibiting artists with a good cross-section of styles and disciplines.
We understand that there’ll be a broad price range, so hopefully something for everyone, whether it’s a treat for yourself or a present for a friend of loved one.

VB Flickr Group Picture of the Week
20, Jan 2010 in Awards, Island-wide, News, Photography
We don’t normally choose our Picture of the Week until Friday, but having just spotted this beautiful shot on the VB Flickr Group Pool, we had to give it an instant award (with maybe another award coming up later in the week).
Well known Island artist and photographer, Tim Johnson, is the man behind the camera. We’re highly recommend checking out the slideshow as it tells a lovely story and left us craving for hot summer’s days.

Amazing what fun you can have with a bunch of elastic bands and willing participants!
Do check out the VB Flickr Pool, there are some brilliant shots from around the Island over the last week.

If you didn’t tune in to IW Radio for our regular lunchtime slot yesterday, then you would have missed our top tips for things happening on the Island over the coming week.
Fear not though because as usual, we’re publishing a recording of the slot for you to play back at your leisure.
Top of the list for our recommendations is the new exhibition by Island photographers Jason Swain and Paul Blackley at Dimbola Lodge.
Wight Surf History: An exhibition of Surf Photography provides a fantastic insight into the Island surf scene and is part of a larger project to chart the history of Island surfing over the last 50 years.

06, Jan 2010 in News, Online, Photography, Ventnor, Youth
We’ve been banging on for ages about how talented young local photographer, Annie Leonard is.
Well, it seems that we’re not the only ones who think so.
We heard yesterday evening that the 16 year old ‘Annie Leibovitz in training’ from Ventnor was chosen to be featured on the Guardian Website in their coveted Camera Club section.
The Guardian picture editor said of Annie’s work “A very promising and stimulating portfolio, and we’re looking forward to seeing more.”

VB Flickr Group member and friend of the blog, AuntieP, has been busy with her camera tonight, taking shots during her travels around Newport.
We love the shot of the policeman below.
It was heart-warming to hear that the Church on the Roundabout and the Medina Centre were offering hot cups of tea to stranded Islanders.

Llamas Avoid Car Crash (Photo Gallery)
21, Dec 2009 in News, Photography, Roads, South Wight
The Llamas who live on the Military Road had a big shock last week, when a van and a car joined them in their grazing field.
It’s understood that as the van went to overtake the car, the driver of the car decided to turn right – ironically as they wanted to have a closer look at the Llamas.
This led to the van and the car veering across to the right side of the road, mounting the grass and smashing the fence down.

Tim Johnson Named Maker of the Month
11, Dec 2009 in Art, Island-wide, News, Photography, The Arts
Tim Johnson is an Island-based artist of many hats – costume; photography; performance art; teaching – and another, one that he’s woven himself out of basket material (he’s a basket maker too).
You could well have seen one of his domes around the Island, including some that are made from living vegetation, so continuing to grow.

There have been some cracking images added to the VB Flickr Group Pool this week.
