Cowes Lifeboat Averts Shipping Lane Emergency

A crippled motor-cruiser in danger of drifting into a shipping lane at the entrance of Southampton Water was towed to safety by Cowes RNLI lifeboat yesterday (Thursday) evening.
The motor-cruiser, a 32 foot Grand Banks class with four people on board, had lost engine power off Bramble Bank. Helmed by Simon Hawkins, the lifeboat towed the boat, which came from Itchenor near Chichester Harbour, was towed to Cowes.
It was the second time in two days that Cowes lifeboat’s volunteers had to take in tow a motor-cruiser in trouble in the Solent. The boat had been off-station for just over an hour.

Cowes Lifeboat Rescues Stranded Fishermen

Three fishermen whose boat was crippled by its own anchor rope were literally hauled out of their predicament in a wind-swept Solent by Cowes RNLI lifeboat yesterday (Wednesday).
The emergency began just before 1pm when the fishermen radioed that their anchor rope had become wrapped around one of the two propellers of their 32 foot motor-cruiser Arco Bellina off Thorness.
Sailing For Heroes Regatta Planned For Yarmouth

If you haven’t already heard, later this year a new event aimed as a tribute to Britain’s serving armed forces makes its way to Yarmouth.
The event, titled Sailing for Heroes, has been organised by the Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners with support from the Royal Solent Yacht Club.

Gym Sessions For Youth in West Wight

A new Youth Gym session starts at West Wight Sports Centre this coming Monday (8th March).
This will be a special session for young people aged from 14 upwards and will run every weekday afternoon from 4.30 – 6.30 pm.
Anyone wishing to take part will require an induction (even if they’ve used other gyms).
New Ventnor Girls Football Club Launched

Following the successful launch of football training for 8-11 year old girls across the Island, we hear that a new girls football club is being created in Ventnor.
Supported by Sport England, the council Sports Unit and Extended Schools Service, weekly coaching sessions start next Friday, 12 March for girls aged between 8 – 11 years old.
Taking place each week at the Rew Valley Sports Centre between 5.30-6.30pm, the training will cost just £1 a week.
Little Britain Challenge Cup Gives £100k to Charities

We heard yesterday that the Little Britain Challenge Cup recently held its annual charity cheque presentation.
They tell us that despite the credit crunch and most people tightening their belts last year, the event raised nearly £100k for the event charities.
Walk The Wight Numbers Auction Starts Today

As we reported last week, once again, the Earl Mountbatten Hospice will be auctioning off registration numbers 1 and 2 for Walk the Wight.
The annual walk across the Island raises much needed cash for the Hospice, one of the worthiest causes on the Island.
The auction opened this morning but as of this afternoon, the highest bid so far is just 99p for ‘number 2′.

Charity Darts Marathon This Week

We all know how popular darts is across the Island, so little wonder that someone hoping to raise cash for a very worthy cause has come up with the idea of a 24 hour darts marathon.
Yes folks, a 24 hour darts marathon.
The event is being organised in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign and is hoping to raise cash and awareness for the campaign.

RIBEX Support Independent Lifeboats

RIBEX returns to Cowes this May for its 11th year and announce today that its official charity for the boat show will be the Independent Lifeboats of Great Britain.
This Suzuki are sponsoring the event at Cowes Yacht Haven which this year will also feature an open air concert on the Saturday night.

36th Annual Sports Achievement Awards

Last night saw the Riverside Centre bursting at the seams with homegrown sporting talent for the 2009 Annual Sports Achievement Awards.
Organised by the Isle of Wight Sports and Recreation Council (IWSRC), the event, now in it’s 36th year, honoured those young and old who have made an outstanding contribution to sports on the Island.
Volunteer Cycle Ride Leaders Sought for Annual Festival

Each September, the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival attracts masses of cyclists to the Island.
The festival features a number of cycling rides, from the more relaxed family rides to the bonkers killer hills challenge.
The Isle of Wight Council tell us that they’re now looking for volunteer cycle ride leaders for this year’s event, taking place between 18 to 26 September.
Island Sporting Heroes Honoured Tonight

Organised by the IW Sports and Recreation Council, the Sports Achievement Awards for 2009 will be the 36th annual presentation honouring Island sportsmen and women for their outstanding contribution to sports.

Wight Surf Exhibition on the Move

Staying in the West, we hear that the Wight Surf Photographic Exhibition that was recently held at Dimbola Lodge has now found a permanent home.
If you weren’t lucky enough to see the collection of superb surfing photos back in January you can now see them at the Sandpipers Hotel in Freshwater Bay.
RNLI Official Cowes Week Charity For Second Year

Once again, organisers of Cowes Week have chosen the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) as their official charity for Cowes Week.
This is the second year running that Cowes Week have shown their support for the RNLI who provide a vital service to the sailing community.
The money raised during the week long regatta which takes place 31 July to 7 August will go directly towards the lifeboat stations supporting the Island at Bembridge, Cowes and Yarmouth.

Angling Vessel Sinks Off The Isle Of Wight
