The Wild Oats Charity Single: The Story

Wednesday, 14th November, 2007 at 4:30 pm, Isle of Wight

The Wild Oats Charity Single: The StoryEvery now and then, an email pops up our inbox that re-reminds us why we put so much time into this VentnorBlog lark.

Hearing from Spike Oatley about ten days ago, was such a time.

Along with the email came The Making Sense Song, by The Wild Oats and the children and staff of St George’s School, Newport.

Listening to it at VentnorBlog HQ, we quickly realised that we were hearing something very special, raising a smile (you can listen to the whole thing at the end of this article).

Indeed, when you get to learn about the advantages that it has brought to the school - like bringing the school closer together and that The Making Sense Song has become the unofficial school anthem - you’ll start to understand our pleasure too.

VentnorBlog readers will know about the gig that’s happening this Friday to mark the launch of the charity single, but we thought you’d like to hear more about the detail of how it came to be.

The Wild Oats Charity Single: The StoryHow is got started
The project was instigated by Spike Oatley, who had been working at the school on and off over the last year with Eccleston George, on a project called “Making Sense,” transforming the school grounds with a sensory trail, designed to encourage more creative learning.

We caught up with Spike to get the details. “I was at home one evening after work, when I thought, ‘what if?’”

When he was back at work the next week, he chatted the idea through with the others and was really pleased to hear that they thought it was a great idea too.

“It then started to take a life of its own,” he continued, “but it couldn’t have done it without Pete Ellis, St George’s Music Teacher.”
