StreetStyle Festival: Report Of The Day

Monday, 20th August, 2007 at 1:03 pm, Isle of Wight

Thanks to Alison for sending through a short report of the first StreetStyle festival which took place on 11th August. Sadly we weren’t around at the time, but very pleased to hear that the day went went and a great time was had by all.

StreetStyle Festival: Report Of The DayThere were two skateboarding competitions at the skate ramp and a “street” competition which consisted of mobile grinding rails and small ramps (which incidentally have still not been returned). Twenty three skaters took part in the event, as well as others who joined in the “free skating” sessions.

The stars of the show were, Conner Henriette (ramp) and Jacob Russell (street) for the 14 and under section and , Nathan Sutherland in the 15-18 section and in the 19 and over section were Tony Ranger (ramp) and Dan Turner(street).

Six bands graced the stage for the in the music marquee for the Battle of the Bands.

StreetStyle Festival: Report Of The DayEmily-Jane took home the gold trophy for her brilliant performance and if you recognise her name, it may be because she was one of the finalists in the Bestival Band Competition.

We hear that the graffiti art went really well with loads of people having a go. This was led by local artists Nathan Holt and Hannah Ray, and there are now five completed boards which will will go up to Ventnor Middle School to decorate the outside of the sports hall.

The organisers reckon that about 300 people attended the event. There was a very relaxed feel to the afternoon with everyone enjoying either participating in or watching the various activities.

StreetStyle Festival: Report Of The DayThe BBQ and sale of drinks, as well as donations raised about £170 for the skate park.

As a final note, although the skate ramp was in use for the festival, it is not ready to be open to the public – it still needs some finishing touches and to be inspected and insured - so keep off it for now.

We’ll let you know once it’s ready for use.
