STATEMENT ON MAN CLAIMING TO BE DOG WARDEN

Friday, 2nd May, 2008 at 5:01 pm, Isle of Wight

Director of Environment and Neighbourhoods Stuart Love said “We have been made aware that a man claiming to be an Isle of Wight Council dog warden has been approaching dog walkers in parks in Ventnor asking for them to pay an on the spot fine. This man does not work for the council.

Dog wardens wear full uniforms with the council logo and carry photo ID at all times. They also not allowed to take money as on the spot fines can only be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice. Anyone who is approached by a person claiming to be a dog warden should ask for ID if they are unsure. If they are not satisfied of the person’s identity, they should
call the police.

We have informed the police of the incidents in Ventnor, and would advise anyone who may be approached by people claiming to be council officers to ask to see their ID.

From the Council, Ventnor
