Nathan Holt and AJ Wells Produce New Public Artwork

Friday, 10th October, 2008 at 1:46 pm, Isle of Wight

AJ Wells have been on IW Radio news today for their involvement with a huge enamelled piece of artwork produced by artist, Laura Boswell, which will be be displayed in an underpass in Aylesbury.

Next week (well, now actually), they’ll hit the headlines again when a new piece of public artwork is unveiled in Sandown.

Designed and produced by local artist Nathan Holt (that’s Nathan, not Nick) the enamelled artwork will take pride of place at the Eastern Gardens.

The piece, entitled, ‘U R HERE’ has been inspired, we’re told, by the natural lines and contours of Sandown Bay. Nathan’s work is certainly getting good coverage across the Island. His work can be found at the Ventnor Skate Park, the Ventnor Youth Centre and the East Cowes ‘no barriers’ project as well as Sandown.

This bold new piece of work features the sun rising from the east above Culver Cliff and the sun setting in the west over Luccombe.

It was produced at the studios of A J Wells, where Nathan created the artwork using a combination of spraying, screen printing and hand painting. It was then fired at over 800°c. Phew!

Hannah George (no relation to funny girl HG playing at the WG tonight) from Island2000 tell us

The artwork is the part of a project called ‘What if?’ which asked local people what artwork they would like on the Island’s Esplanades.

The most original and intriguing ideas were compiled into the ‘What if…?’ Book and the organisation behind the project, Island 2000 Trust, then entered the competitive Art+ Awards to get funding to help start making some of the ideas a reality.

The project is supported by Island 2000 Trust, Sandown Town Council, the Isle of Wight Council and AJ Wells Enamellers.

Well done to everyone involved, we reckon this will certainly brighten up the Eastern Gardens. It’s brilliant to see local art out in the public realm.

I didn’t realise that A J Wells carried out such large projects such as the Laura Boswell artwork throughout the whole country. It’s also nice to see this company putting something back into the Isle of Wight. Well done.
