Live/Wired First Round Winners
Thursday, 10th January, 2008 at 12:17 pm, Isle of Wight
Congratulations to Island Bands The Shanklin Freak Show and Goodbye Stereo who we read in the County Press were joint winners in the first round of Live/Wired competition.

Several bands battled it out last night at The Studio in Newport, but these two wowed the judges and are now through to the final where they’ll have a chance to win a place to play at this years Isle of Wight Festival.
Any bands wanting to enter the second stage of the comp, should get their submission in pronto as the deadline is this Friday
Tracks can be submitted to livewired @ iwcp2.demon.co.uk or send your CD to Live/Wired, IW County Press, Brannon House, 123 Pyle Street, Newport, PO30 1ST.
Many thanks to Ros at The County Press for calling through the offer of pics from the night. Can you spot yourself in the crowd?

It was a good night. The Shanklin Freak Show were great, personally I thought The Kurves should have got the second spot but well done to Goodbye Stereo.
January 10th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Last night was a great night.
Altho, I personally thought shanklin freak show were not that good and didnt deserve to get through. instead of them it shoulda been the kurves.
The SFS acted like they were in a panto!
January 10th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I agree!
I have to say tho - Goodbye Stereo were the best band there by far!
They were incredible and the support they had from the crowd was unbelievable!
fantastic atmosphere - everyone singing along to them!
great night

I agree.
I thought the Kurves were superb and deserved to go through, didnt they win the voting stage? Nice to see a band that cater for all tastes.
The shanklin freakshow were terrible, a camp carnival mess.
January 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
yer they did win the voting stage.
“Camp carnival mess” haha Legend.
January 10th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
sorry matt but everyone was not singing along to goodbye stereo. They had 10-12 teenagers turn up for them and go, as ive heard happens at all their gigs.
Having voted for the Kurves previously i came to see them, and i thought they were very good. But more interestingly i noticed how although they were first they recieved the loudest applause all night.
Injustice has truely been served in this contest. Serious questions about the Island Music need to be asked if last nights result is anything to go by.
January 11th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I agree with matt on this one.
i also feel that jason hasnt got a very good knowdledge of the music industry. never mind.
January 11th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Also to ad to the last comment - i thought the kurves were very good and did well. I also feel that they should of got through along with goodbye stereo as they were the best bands there.
January 11th, 2008 at 9:57 am
the kurves were fantastic the other night, and yes it does seem that the judges were never going to vote for them.
The guy that did the MCing (or whatever you want to call it) was so biased towards the two bands that went through, and the fact that both ‘winning’ bands had their own ‘rent-a-crowd’ with them who just dissapeared really annoyed me.
This was a talent contest and the most talented band didn’t win, those judges need to take a look at themselves and decide if they really know anything about music, because in my eyes they know absolutely sod all!
January 11th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Jason. Quick question for you.
Where you any good at maths back at school? Or are you visually impaired? Take a good hard look at the picture at the top of the page. I think you’ll find that there are substantially more than 10 people in the crowd. Oh…hang on, and who might be performing. Goodbye Stereo it seems.
It may also be of interest to you that the teenagers were probably to do with the fact that the event was hosted by the Isle of Wight County Press and PLATFORM ONE, which just so happens to be a music college (made up mostly of teenagers) Goodbye Stereo, rent-a-crowd they are not! They simply have a loyal fan base, which may just happen not to be into any of the other stuff performed on the night! These things happen, especially as the five bands performing covered a wide range of genres, some not to everyone’s taste…evidently.
Unfortunately the judge’s decision is final.
P.S. Perhaps The Kurves should stick to online performances if their set was anything to go by, I’ve seen more life from a dead fish.
January 11th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
and playing fancy dress and pretending that you are something you’re not is the way to go then is it ?
Don’t get me wrong SFS and Goodbye Stereo are both good bands, but appeal to a more niche market, SFS in particular.
I just thought that The Kurves would be more suitable for a festival such as The IOW Festival, it is a shame that all three bands couldn’t have gone through, would have been interesting to see what would have happened had all the bands had an equal time on stage!
January 11th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Why, how did the set length differ?
January 11th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
Matt, I’m sorry but I have to disagree with you. I thought The Kurves played a great set, the crowd certainly seemed to this so. As an Islander, if I wanted a band to represent Island music at the Festival, I’d probably choose The Kurves from what I saw. Please don’t take offense, I’m a fan of Goodbye Stereo and they have some good tunes and a great fan base. This is something you’re not going to get with a band which only formed a few months ago.
It does seem ironic that the band consisting of a member or two from Platform One won the night which was sponsored by Platform One and judged by members from Platform One? Or am I wrong?
Peace. x
January 11th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
here, here. Garth has it nailed in my opinion.
Great band.
January 11th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
You don’t happen to be a member of the Kurves at all do you? haha! Now that would be sad.
But to be honest with you the kurves did do remarkably well in the internet poll. How does that work if you’ve only been together a few months and now your saying that the band don’t have a good a fanbase as Goodbye Stereo! Odd.
Your not wrong at all about the Platform One bit, I know the guys. But how do you know? Someone wouldn’t happen to of told you on the night just before they announced the votes did they? Now that would be funny. Just something someone said Garth.
January 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
Hey Matt, no I’m not a member but I follow the music scene on the Island. I agree with you regarding the internet poll bit, but from experience it’s easy to ask fans, friends and family to vote for you, place banners and requests on your MySpace page, Facebook etc. Depends on how much you want to pimp yourself - and it’s easy to do on the ‘net!
I overheard a few people talking at the bar mid-way through the session about the Platform One bit, and it’s only me putting 2+2 together to get 5 so please forgive me.
It’s great to get events like this held in Newport - it was well organised and put together.
January 11th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
I agree with you there buddy, it’s all good for the music scene! And your right about the Internet thing too, all these sites help gain exposure.
But in all honestly it’s about the live performance. The Kurves were good and did deserve a place in the final, but being together that short period of time wouldn’t have helped them live. All bands had minor mistakes, that’s just what happens, but the only thing I will say is for them to be a bit more lively on stage and smile. Other than that they’re on their way. To be honest it may well be a confidence thing, not having the experience, that’s not their fault, it’ll come in time.
And look at the five bands that played, I’m sure there were plenty of bands that didn’t make it through that should of. Personally I think it should have been live heats all the way through. At the end of the day, isn’t that the prize, to play live!
January 11th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
could have solved all this and had an independent panel of judges!
Anyway, all the bands will probably play on the bandstand, and who wants to headline it anyway!
No one wants to pay £140 to watch the band stand when the big acts are on the main stage unfortunately!
January 11th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
I think all these comments are eluding to the fact that the shanklin freak show should not have gone through.
agree?
January 11th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Agree!
January 11th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
‘rent-a-crowd’ ????? I believe it is more commonly known as a fan base which this particular band has got through working hard, writing good songs, gigging and generally being some of the nicest guys I have ever encounted on the IOW music scene. Now if this is something that should looked down on then whats the point of being in a band?
January 11th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
agree!
Loving the Kurves almost as much as Goodbye Stereo x
January 11th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
what the hell is with all the arguing? bit pathetic.
first of all. WELL DONE TO EVERY SINGLE BAND THAT ENTERED THE COMPETITION AND BIG THUMBS UP TO ALL THAT MADE IT THROUGH AND PLAYED ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
i did enjoy seeing all the bands, but
GOODBYE STEREO are incredible and deserved to go through. SHANKLIN FREAK SHOW are one of the most original bands on this island so im happy they made it through too.
And what does it matter bout how old the fans are? they are fans, they come to support the bands. your just pissed off cos the other bands didnt get as much support as the stereo did.
either way, all bands were top notch. bring on heat 2 and stop complaining. jesus

January 11th, 2008 at 4:18 pm
Sorry theo. You are so very very wrong.
Originality was goodbye stereo, the kurves and i thought the neurophobics. Nerosa were a poor imitation of Nirvana, and The Shanklin Freak Show are nothing more than a good marilyn manson covers band. Also variation in songs was surely lacking.
January 11th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
What a great night, well done to all involved.
We can’t have enough live music & creating
opportunities for all the bands involved can only be a good thing.
Based on wednesday nights performance goodbye stereo offered the best performance, material & stage presence & I am sure have a bright future in the music industry, Good luck.
January 11th, 2008 at 6:59 pm
What a fantastic night at the studio, i think all the bands did great and such a wide range of styles! Brilliant!
My favs were the Kurves and Shanklin Freak Show, they got me rockin…have to disagree with the above comments on the kurves stage presence..i thought they held eveyones attention and got a fantastic reaction. Not all bands are happy clappy and smiles all the time….nothing wrong with mean and moody!!lol
SFS were wicked, so much fun…
Good luck to everyone……

frankly,
GBS were the best band there, the shanklin shite show, and that other 3 peice who dont even have a drummer were poor.
GBS are by far the most talented band to come out of the island.

I Agree with you there frank!
January 14th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Me too! x
January 14th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Same here!
January 14th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS. EVERY BAND UP THERE ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT DESERVED TO BE THERE. THEY HAVE ALL WRITTEN SONGS,REHEARSED,BOUGHT EQUIPMENT AND TRAVELLED ALL OVER, TO AND FROM GIGS,HIRING VANS, PAYING OUT FOR FERRIES,PETROL ETC,RARELY COVERING THEIR OUTLAY FOR ONE REASON ONLY. THEY LOVE WHAT THEY DO. FAIR ENOUGH, IF YOU DON’T LIKE A BAND, GO OUTSIDE,STAND AT THE BAR…LEAVE. NOBODY FORCED ANYONE TO LISTEN.IS IT REALLY FAIR TO LAUNCH PERSONAL ATTACKS ON PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST TRYING TO ENTERTAIN?
THOSE THAT CAN, DO. THOSE THAT CAN’T,CRITICISE.
January 14th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
January 14th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
agree.
everyone has there own taste in music and wednesday night had a diverse taste.
Good vibe on wednesday!

January 14th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
We understand your passion about the subject, but in the words of Rev. Lovejoy’s wife, “Will somebody please think of the children”
We have youngsters reading the blog and this sort of language is not appropriate.
January 14th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
well said Sal.
his passion on this topic is very strong - as is everybody elses. I however feel that peter is wrong. and why should you feel the need to go all out to get your view across ? everyone on this blog could do that and it would probably end up being a nasty conversation. and like sal said - there are children reading this blog as fans of the stereo and SFS are kids/teenagers
January 14th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
peter - you have gota be the funniest person ive ever heard of since i dont no what.
you are so deluded.
just take a look at yourself and what your posting - take a long hard look at yourself!
January 15th, 2008 at 12:00 pm
I think Gary hit the nail there…
“there are children reading this blog as fans of the stereo and SFS are kids/teenagers.”
Which is all fine and good but these arent the average demographic of the isle of wight festival. I think the recorded average age last year was around 28-29*, surely the judges should have bared this in mind?
(*I was involved in online ticketing and registration.)
January 15th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
gbs sound like all the over bands in the chart now where as the shanklin freak show have a new and wild sound!!!
January 15th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Look.
the shanklin freak show were awful. FACT.
Goodbye stereo. best band by far. FACT.
GBS have a unique sound which is fantastic. FACT.
January 16th, 2008 at 9:37 am
Rather than keep going round in circles, let’s close comments on it now.
January 16th, 2008 at 9:41 am
I have to agree with that.
