Life Without Alex Dyke: It’s Dreamy
Wednesday, 26th March, 2008 at 10:00 am, Isle of Wight
Thank goodness the need to listen to Alex Dyke’s phone-in show has been removed, now the initial public consultation was ended by the vote at County Hall last week.
Not having to listen to him yesterday makes us realise how much better life is without him. It’s like removing a poison from the room.
We’re aware that old Dyke-y has been foisting his ’skills’ on the people on the Wight for many years, but it’s disheartening to know that such a low standard of ‘entertainment’/discussion should be the formula that the Island has to put up with.
Many who have called his programme will know that he isn’t open for a discussion, if you happen to stray outside his narrow view of the world.
Some of us who have not been given air-time view this as a badge of pride - we’d rather not be associated with someone with such disgusting views.
A number of people have said to us that what’s needed is an alternative - a place where people are free to express their views without being cut-short, spoken over, or having their perfectly-legitimate views ridiculed by Dyke and his side-kick, the Doc.

there’s nothing stopping a group of residents setting up their own online radio station.
i believe that technically it’s quite easy - although gaining a widespread listenership is difficult compared to transmitted broadcasts.

I heard him earlier, he was discussing about people leaving the island and moving to Spain. The funny thing was he had a guest on, she used to be on the phone-in 10 years ago before she moved to Spain. On air it turned out that when she used to call in she lived on the mainland! and had never lived on the Island in her life. You would think he would have got his facts straight first. The interesting thing for me was the fact that my opinion had not been respected as I was formally from the mainland and have lived here for only 3 years, yet he has some woman on the phone-in voicing her opinons and yet she has never lived on the Island in her whole life. Talk about hypocritical.
Then, briefly the schools were spoken about and Alex said no lets have a break from this I dont wanna hear about the schools today?
Am I mistaken or has there been quite a long break from the schools on his phone-in show.
It made me laugh because he was saying how he thought some schools should shut but how some had been saved. I think he believes he has saved them. Daft, crazy hypocrite of a man!

When IW Radio was setting-up I had the view of a vibrant community radio station much like ‘Radio West’ in the ‘Shoestring’ series, you probably need to be in your 30’s to remember the programme (see YouTube - Eddie Shoestring: Cops on the Box). The radio station was the centre of the community and held that position because it invited people to talk to it and to the listeners. IW Radio started off in that way but numerous financial crises drove the owners to sell out to a national network and it is now wall to wall musac with what local information there is squeezed into mostly tiny slots and appalling local news coverage. The phone-in would be the cultural centrepiece of a good local radio station but given that most people do not want to be abused or patronized by a couple of dick heads, they do not ‘phone leaving the space for the sad, damaged, racially biased and generally thick-skinned. Unfortunately this gives a very poor view of the Island both to those visiting and the thousands of people from Weymouth to Lewes who can pick up the station and think of us as, with apologies to David Nobbs, as:
“….. Communists, Maoists, Trotskyists, neo-Trotskyists, crypto-Trotskyists, union leaders, Communist union leaders, atheists, agnostics, long-haired weirdos, short-haired weirdos, vandals, hooligans, football hooligans, namby-pamby probation officers, rapists, papists, papist rapists, foreign surgeons – headshrinkers ….. Thugs, bully-boys, psychopaths, sacked policemen, security guards, sacked security guards, ratialists, anybody-bashers, rear Admirals, queer admirals, Vice Admirals, fascists, neo-fascists, crypto-fascists, loyalists, neo-loyalists, crypto-loyalists …..”
Will they still want to come here and if they do shall we still want them?

L pinkerton.
You are right actually. IWRADIO is giving the Isle of Wight a bad name.
It does not represent the people of the Isle of wight as a whole, and in actual fact Al and Doc are making residents of the Isle of Wight look stupid.
I cannot believe this prejudice and narrow minded phone in show still exists.
He has a go at people who have moved to the Island, and believes they are not entitled to an opinion. Yet Alex himself, who I believe has lived here all his life seeks to make the Island population look stupid, and on top of this, live on air he says how the Isle of wight is not how it used to be and how he wants to leave!
This is great publicity for the Isle of Wight Alex, well done you foolish man.
How dare you diss me, at least I big up the Island and love it more than any other place in this world.
Why are you such a hypocrite.
