The Quay Arts welcomes London-based award-winning pianist Kate Williams for an evening of wonderful variety of harmony and texture in her playing and dynamic original compositions.
Kate is the daughter of the talented classical guitarist John Williams, famous for his composition Cavatina which is familiar to most people as the theme for the classic ‘80’s film The Deerhunter.
Kate was awarded the John Dankworth Award For Talent Deserving Wider Recognition in 2000.
A classical pianist and teacher, Kate has worked with various jazz musicians, performing around the UK as well as in Holland, Denmark and Germany. She has played with numerous names on the UK jazz scene, including Dave Cliff, John Etheridge, Jack Parnell, Matt Wates, Tim Whitehead, Tony Woods, Bobby Wellins, Chris Biscoe, Allison Neale, Julian Siegel, and Juliet Kelly.
Her Trio and quartet’s repertoire is a blend of Kate’s compositions and arrangements and includes tunes by Mulgrew Miller and Lennie Tristano.
“You could have heard the proverbial pin drop while Williams spun solos packed with dynamic and textural nuance from her melodic, gently lyrical original material, interspersing it with intriguing visits to modern jazz classics by the likes of Thelonious Monk. A small triumph, not only for Williams and her hair-trigger-accurate rhythm section (lithe bassist Jeremy Brown and brisk drummer Tristan Mailliot), but also for the aforementioned Vortex Steinway, which positively sang under her fingers.” Chris Parker. ‘THE EMBRACE’
“A superbly lucid and inventive pianist and composer.” Humphrey Lyttleton
Kate first visited Quay Arts in the ‘90’s when her father played here, and she is sure to delight a rapt audience once again.
