Island Plane Crash Memorial Service

We came across some news online over the weekend, highlighting a special memorial church service due to be held on the Island on 18 November.
It is to mark the 50th anniversary of the terrible plane crash that took place in a quarry near Brook on 15 November 1957.
The plane was carrying 50 passengers from Southampton heading to Las Palmas and Madeira. The pilots became aware of engine problems shortly after take-off and unfortunately, the plane crashed into the quarry as it was passing the Island.
We’re sure that many of you will remember this tragic event and you may’ve even been one of those who helped in the rescue.
Organisers of the service, to be held at St Mary’s Church in Brook, are hoping to get in contact with rescuers, survivors of the crash and family members of those who lost their lives to invite them to the service. As we are read as widely off the Island as on, it’s hoped that this posting may bring this to the attention of anyone connected.
Nick Dorley-Brown, deputy chairman of the Brook and Mottistone PCC said: “We wanted to mark this anniversary, as there is nothing in the church or on the site to commemorate this tragic event. It shouldn’t be forgotten.”

I came across this story in a 50 year old Times newspaper I had just bought a present. Have just been searching for more information

My Dad was there doing national service and he was called in to help out that night.

my dad was also there he was duty driver in the army that night and had to bring back the bodies to newport he still remembers it well.
