Gary Plumley Back In Ventnor
Thursday, 11th May, 2006 at 10:13 pm, Isle of Wight
If flying-monkey-kick is not your bag but you want to get out on Friday night, The Rotary Club of Ventnor has organised a charidy do at the Wight Light Gallery in Church Street.
The Gary Plumley Quartet return to Ventnor (his website says he lives in Southend on Sea but he spend so much time here it can’t be true?) for a night of smooth jazz. It’s all in a good cause and they’ve even got a licensed bar.
Hopefully there are some tickets left (all £12.50 of the ticket price goes to charity). Call 857097 to find out.
Doors open at 7.30pm and the action starts at 8pm. Wight Light Gallery, 6 Church Street, Ventnor, Isle of Wight.

Just back from the Gary Plumley Gig, in Wight Light Gallery, and it was great! All tickets sold out, so a capacity audience for the two sets. Quite brilliant. It has been a year since I last heard him, and it took me back to my early days hanging out in the original Pizza Express in Museum Street, London and the later Pizza on the Park, listening to late night Jazz. I was never really into Ronnie Scott’s, just preferred emerging alternatives.
Stephen, the owner of Wight Light Gallery, got the lighting just right.
Up lighters and using the remaining evening light through his top skylights.
Gary does in fact, live in Bembridge now, and does workshops here in Ventnor.
He does covers of the best jazz musicians of all time, and interprets them with his band, the Leon Simmonds Trio which make up the Quartet. Leon Simmonds on Bass, Dave Smith on Piano, and Pete Durham on drums and percussion.
Jazz as you all know is not about fast quick songs but tunes drawn out to fit the moment and it was just great.
The ones I remember where Body and Soul, You’ve Changed (Billie Holiday), Coming home Baby (My favourite),and All the Things You Are.
I spoke to him in the break and asked him what he liked so much about Ventnor, and he said the ruggedness of Ventnor, and its atmosphere, cosmopolitan and vibey………………………!!!!
It was great, truly great folks!
I pondered with him if I could persuade Graeme Barker, who is in charge of the Music Main Stage for V.Fest2006, if Gary could be persuaded to do a set there…..well we can but see. He is interested!!!!! I thought it would be good balance for everything else planned!
