Don’t Forget Beach Clean

Friday, 25th April, 2008 at 10:53 am, Isle of Wight

Don't Forget Beach CleanDon’t forget that tomorrow sees the Brighstone Beach Clean takes place.

Those willing to go down and help collect litter from the beach, should assemble at the Grange Farm reception at 10am.

The weather forecast is lovely for tomorrow, so why not do something to improve the environment you share and help make a difference.

It’s advisable to take along gloves, and you’ll be pleased to hear that those lovely people at Grange Farm will be providing refreshments for those volunteering their time to help out.

The rubbish from the beach clean will be recorded by the Marine Conservation Society who do quarterly beach cleans on the Island.

why not draft in some of the people who’ve been sentenced to a community punishment by the courts.

it’s not too onerous - a nice walk along the seashore - and they’d be improving their local community which is the idea of such penalties.

We already do use them for that from time to time amongst many other tasks. However it seems that as far as beaches are concerned there’s an even greater supply of litter than there is offenders, so any voluntary effort such as the MCS is warmly welcomed.

Enjoyed the beach clean this morning with my 6-year old. Lovely weather, good turn out, and I hear the tally was more than 100 bags of rubbish. What a depressing amount of old tat washes ashore and collects in these chines. And why so many plastic Kinder Egg capsules?

Highlight: seeing an adder for the very first time. It was coiled up on a bit of plastic on the bank of the chine sunning itself. It scooted off but when I returned to the spot later to pick up the plastic, the adder was underneath; and slid off again, startled (as was I!).

A great big pat on the back for all who helped clear the beach today, over a hundred bags of mostly nasty plastic was cleared away by all the lovely people that gave there time freely. well done

I think the ship ( the Napoli) that sunk recently has something to do with the Kinder eggs, also the shampoo bottles, a lot of containers broke open and the contents will be appearing on a beach near you for some time to come

A big thanks to everyone for coming down. The Rapanui Boys want to give a big thank you! and we hope you enjoyed yourselves. yes over 100 bin liners of rubbish - equating to around 400 kilos of plastics and other bits. we’ll let you know when the next one is! around three months
