David Pugh & Steve Beynon On IW Radio Phone-In
Tuesday, 29th January, 2008 at 11:33 am, Isle of Wight
Leader of the Council David Pugh and Director of Children’s Services, Steve Beynon will be on the Alex Dyke Phone In today between noon and 1pm to answer questions from the public on the subject of the proposed schools closures.
If you’ve attended one of the public meetings where the questions were, in my opinion, well fielded, and didn’t get a chance to ask a question, now is your opportunity.
Tune your radio into 102 or 107fm and call Alex on 822002 between noon and 1pm. Thanks to Wendy for the heads up.

We’re now listening in to this show. What a disugsting joke it is … it’s not a discussion, it’s a broadcast opportuniy for the council to deliver their views to the Isle of Wight.
All this We’re so busy, you can’t respond to the councillors answers stuff is nonsense.
What a fix up!

Ha ha, yes, not hard to guess which side ‘dear Dykey’ is on. It’s all pretence.

Well said Frank - this phone-in is so painful to listen to, and has done Beynon and Pugh no favours whatsoever.
What a disgrace.

Just because he had to walk 4 miles to school as a nipper, Steve Beynon thinks it’s alright for our kids to walk 2 miles to school on some of the most dangerous roads in the UK.

Oh dear, yet another ‘managed’ phone-in.
Rules: Ask a question, accept the answer and be prepared to be cut off.
No room for dialogue or further questioning then?
Just like last night at Ventnor Middle School, except the facilitator there was a hell of a lot more charming than David Holmes.

Well, I got to ask my question about when, as per government requirements, we will be asked if we want a faith high school (that question is not in the questionnaire).
Answer: Yes, Wendy, you’re quite right, and we will consult on that once we have taken the decision in March.
Um, but the faith high school is already presented as fact in all 3 options… Not that I got to say that that bit, because of course I got cut off.
Very Alice in Wonderland.

Hmmm … not really letting people come back with further points isn’t the best way to extend debate is it?
For me the best line in the phone in was from David Pugh - “I’m not going to have children for the sake of the consultation” - brilliant line.

Got over my previous agrovated state now.
Has anyone else noticed that the council is sneaking in a new item?
Mr Pugh told the listeners that School governors could put forward a case as to why their school shouldn’t close.
First time I’d heard about that one.
Gives them a great get out I guess - or is it more a way to protect Tory councillors who are in seats with slim majorities - like Wroxall?

Well Frank, Sue, Martin, etc, it looks like you’re not the only ones who are raising the question on Alex Dyke’s position with this one. There’s questions being raised on SaveIOWSchhols now.

Hey Alex, I got cut off halfway through my question and even Alan Wells said to me afterwards that he could see that’s what you did. I sat there listening to you and Doc asking your own questions - and answering them. I was more bemused than anything - being live on air is scary enough but not being sure if you’re through and then getting cut off is very off putting. I think it’s a pity people are having a go at you over the demo - you did well and I thank you for that because getting people together like that is very difficult but the school phone ins this week did not seem particularly balanced - hence all the flak. It’s a thankless task - but at least you’re getting paid - we’re all doing this for nothing or worse - losing money through not working! But it’s a worthwhile cause.
