David Pugh Is NOT, Repeat, NOT A Child Sex Offender
Friday, 8th August, 2008 at 5:13 pm, Isle of Wight
Either someone at the County Press is being mischievous or page four of this week’s CP is a genuine mistake.
You know what it’s like, you get the CP, give it a quick skim through to see if there’s anything worth reading in it, but today something leapt out at us, causing us to nearly choke on our pork scratchings.
At the top of the fourth page, we see a photo of Our Dear Leader, David Pugh, slap bang next to a headline screaming out “Child sex offence man faces prison,” with the thinnest of lines between them.
Clearly the strong Christian belief of Our Dear Leader means he wouldn’t ever be connected with a crime quite so vile.
We’re hoping that our headline seeks to clarify the situation for anyone who has been taken down the wrong path by the layout in the CP.
Looks like whoever was in charge of layout this week at the CP was having a off day, or was trying to have a bit of fun at Mr Pugh’s expense.
Naughty, naughty.

I saw this yesterday and had the same reaction as you!

I think you should get an official denial out of the press office..

“Clearly the strong Christian belief of Our Dear Leader means he wouldn’t ever be connected with a crime quite so vile.”
Not necessarily…

I just don’t see the fuss, someone’s article/picture has to go next to such unpleasant articles, why not his? Just because he thinks he’s precious and superior I don’t see why the rest of us should? Still I did enjoy a good laugh knowing he thinks he’s SO important. Well done CP for taking the responsibility of filling the pages of your paper neatly and effectively. Keep up the good work
Personally if I were keen to be photographed as an encouragement to take up a fitness regime I’d worry more about the pasty white legs and pigeon chest David rather than the adjacent head line….
August 9th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
I thought your comment, reaction and snide remarks were rather unpleasant MT whoever you are.
August 9th, 2008 at 10:39 pm
Very precious Oldie! Why shouldn’t we all have a good laugh at the expense of our elected “representatives” - we get little else to show for the effort involved in voting for them (or not).
August 9th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
its just funny…leave it at that, bit like the editing on the first edition of the Gazette
August 9th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Dear Oldie, who ever you are
I have dealt with Mr Pugh for over ten years (in a non political arena) so whilst not a world authority on the state of his legs (thankfully), I do feel able to comment with some degree of accuracy on the content of his character, his persona, his attitude towards others and his desperate drive for self publicity. Since being elevated to the lofty heights of Commander in Chief, the whole IOW has also been unfortunately subjected to his odious character. I therefore feel vindicated and validated in my comments about a 26 year old, who lives at home with mum and who loves nothing more than to see his picture in the paper and to lecture the teaching profession (having dropped out of two degree courses) on the best way forward for IW children. It is therefore extremely funny to find this media hungry, egotist’s picture where it was on this week’s page 4 of the County Press. If the state of his scrawny legs and his concave chest were all we had to worry about, I would feel a lot happier. But the point of a blog is to bounce ideas & comments however conflicting opinions may be, off of each other. I’ll open the debate “oldie” What is it about Mr Pugh’s legs that you like so much? Enlighten me…..

“MT Says: I just don’t see the fuss,”
What fuss? It’s a humourous observation - that’s all.
August 10th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Maggie, I believe that MT is right. If it had been someone unknown to the general public, would VB have featured it?
Actually MT, David Pugh is 28 and still living at home. Perhaps he is waiting to see if he will still be earning the juicy salary of Council Leader after next May/June, I don’t suppose that working in a shop pays quite as well.
Oldie - you’re not a friend of David Pugh are you? It’s a fact of life that politicians get stick and I’m sure that DP would find it worse to be ignored than to have the Michael extracted, at least people are talking about him. MT is right that he is publicity crazy with an inflated ego. Don’t you worry about him, this sort of thing will roll off him like the proverbial water off a duck’s back, bless…..
August 10th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
Perhaps it would have been better not to have commented on the CP’s error at all. Let’s face it, sex offences against children are no laughing matter and I’m sure that David Pugh would be the first to agree.

Who are you all? You know who I am so,come on, own up.
August 10th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
“You know who I am”
Should we? I’ve no idea, I’m afraid…

S Welch Says: “You know who I am”
Sorry if I’ve met you but forgotten, I have no idea who you are.

‘You know who I am’…Aaah…
The great Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room. 1969.

I was going to say that you’re giving away your age, Steve, but then I remembered that I also like William Byrd, and even I’m not 400…

S Welch Says: “If it had been someone unknown to the general public, would VB have featured it?”
That was the point.
August 11th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
Sal says “thst was the point”
Yes Sal, the point was to bring Ventnor Blog readers’ (of which there are many) attention to the article on page 4 of this week’s County Press so that they could have a laugh at David Pugh’s expense, so inviting comments on same.
I think that could be classified as making a fuss and I was just agreeing with MT,even though it meant stating the obvious!
August 11th, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Hello last comment from me:James P : I know S Welch and yes be afriad be VERY afrid. She’s a smart cookie. Sal: Pugh can take it, he has skin like a rhinosurus(and legs like chicken. Could he be the Darwinian missing link? ) Oldie: Nothing to add …nuff said. S Welch I know that you know that HE knows, that I know, you know. Keep fighting on, even under the threat of the jack booted pasty legged leader, he can be defeated and hopefully will one day end up stuffed (and I don’t mean with just paxo, cluck cluck) Keep up the fab site VB great blog x

I know!!
Democracy is still alive in this country, albeit badly wounded. Let’s hope that we on the Island get an election next year which is fairly and honestly fought.
This is my last post as Ventnor Blog is not a political site, local or otherwise (I usually read Geoff Lumley’s Blog for that)!
August 11th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
S Welch: I think you’ve missed the point here - I’m absolutely sure that it was _not_ Simon’s intention for people to have a laugh at DP’s expense, it was simply a friendly jibe at the CP and their editorial decision on layout.
Why make that your last comment on the blog?
Hopefully you have opinions you’d like to share on subjects other than those connected to politics?
The more the merrier in our opinion. Look forward to seeing you back again soon.
August 12th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
OK Sal, I’ll take your word for it and take the article at face value!
I said that the previous post was the last, well I was mistaken. I just want to say to Oldie (if you are still reading this) that, if you knew what I know about what DP tried (and failed) to do to MT, then you would understand why MT was moved to write the comments above.
August 12th, 2008 at 2:51 pm
PS I think I shall assume a pseudonym for any future posting, it seems to be the accepted way in blogland.
If the spirit moves me then I shall indeed add my thoughts, it’s better than getting on with my work! I have opinions on lots of things (some might say I am opinionated but not to my face).
August 12th, 2008 at 4:02 pm
S Welch Says: “You know who I am”
Were you the Headmaster at Greyfriars?
But then MT Says: “I know S Welch and yes be afriad be VERY afrid. She’s a smart cookie.”
OK then, if not the HM at Greyfriars, were you agent 99 in Get Smart?
I’m suitably afrid!
Is cookie a clue? Are you related to J Thomson Wartenburg?
Come on, we give up!
Maureen and her labrador? Sally the Wonder dog?
And who is MT? Did he/she miss out the GBG in the middle?
What is it all about? Why are we here? Will the ultimate battle result in victory for the wind turbines…..or the Jazz Festival?
Come on Squelch, you can tell us!
Oh and by the way, if the spirit moves you that much, maybe you should lay off the sauce!
August 12th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
“What DP tried (and failed) to do to MT. !?
The plot thickens.
August 12th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Tommy:
NO
NO
NO
NO
NO
NO
and if MT thinks I’m a smart cookie then I guess I must be!
NO, I can’t tell you, not here anyway.
It’s you that’s moved me - you little spirit-mover you.

This is a non story and some people’s comments are really petty so much so it makes them look rather stupid.
Some people may not agree with all of David Pugh’s politics (myself included) however there are very few people on this island who are prepared to put their head above the parapet and make much needed tough decisions, and who can blame them if they have to put up with such vicious personal comments from people who aren’t even prepared to put their name to such comments.
August 13th, 2008 at 10:24 am
“This is a non story”
Really?
Come on - rabid self-publicist gets fingers (or possibly knees) burned in local paper by own quest for publicity certainly amuses me.
As for “much needed tough decisions”, that’s no help when they’re the wrong ones! Remember Blair…
August 13th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
Toby, I’m tempted to think that you need a sense-of-humour transplant. Lighten up, this was “simply a friendly jibe at the CP and their editorial decision on layout” (Sal, 7.01pm on 11/8). It’s a bit much to describe it as a non story, do all items have to be’important’? I always thought that blogs were an exchange of views and chat between people who otherwise wouldn’t meet.
DP aspires to a political career (hence the self-publicity) and who has already spent 4 years in the Westminster arena. MT’s comments are mild compared to what he will have been used to (see comments on http://www.order-order.com which is a Conservative political blog).
There is a world of difference between making fun of a public figure (who enthusiastically engages in self-promotion) and deliberately trying to cause damage to someone and their family quite undeservedly. The latter is the action of someone with entirely different (and decidedly unchristian) values to those of MT.
