Cracking Pork Scratchings … In Ventnor

Thursday, 23rd March, 2006 at 12:03 pm, Isle of Wight

portk scratchingsWarning: All veggies stop reading now.

Last week I was given a bag of pork scratchings by Airon from the Ventnor Brewery … it seems they are branching out and now have a shop full of local produce … more details coming soon.

Although no more, I was a vegetarian for 14 years … and despite my return to a carnivorous lifestyle I’d still not ventured far enough down that road to face eating piggie skin.

But I’ve got to say … these pork scratchings are simply marvellous … and they’re local.

Get down to the Groggery (the VB that’s Ventnor Brewery shop) and find out for yourselves.

I will make a point of buying some. My most embarrasing moment with crackling was when I was sponsored by Apple to motivate Bodyshop to take New Media seriously…..after a great working day, I found myself at a rather nice pub with everyone, and having not eaten, I was given a lovely piece of fresh crackling by the chef with some apple sauce to nibble.

I was nibbling as delicately, as on does, in front of a rather nice girl, who nearly fainted when she asked what I was eating. The girl with her(sort of minder) helped her out of the room to recover from the shock, came back and then told me she was a veggie and winked at me to say it was OK and the day had gone well…what a faux pas. The Apple Computer guys teased me all night long. Turned out the near fainting girl was a senior manager.

My best recipe for cooking is to ask the butcher to take the skin off and cook it on its own and the posk in a stock. That way it stays tender.

I am sure Len Starkey will have a much more sensible idea for cooking
