At the Ventnor Town Council last night, Cllr Colin Elvers brought to the attention of those attending the meeting details of a door to door con man operating in the area.
Colin had received a note from a St Lawrence resident, which pointed out that a man going by the name of Liam Muir (no physical description given) had managed to con £40 out of an elderly lady in the St Lawrence area for a first aid kit which contained just a few plasters and bandages.
It is thought that the lady paid the money to get rid of the caller.
Thanks to James for sending through this report about the dress sense of St Lawrence’s residents - only joking - he is of course reporting on the wonderful tradition of well dressing. Ed
A group of local residents gathered for the sixth annual well-blessing ceremony at St. Lawrence Well last Saturday, 26th July.
The well was decorated with floral panels for the occasion. Donations collected are to be given to WaterAid and St. Lawrence Peace Garden.
The ancient well at St. Lawrence, transformed in the nineteenth century into a romantic folly, may once have been a holy well visited by medieval pilgrims en route to the curative White Well at Whitwell.
At last night’s Ventnor Town Council, Cllr Buster Bartlett asked his fellow councillors to consider adopting the following statement (see below) in relation to the future of the Undercliff Drive.
Cllr Brian Lucas seconded the proposal by Cllr Bartlett and added that he had helped on the proposal in order that discussions move forward. He felt that every time the subject of Undercliff Drive was raised at the TC, that past history was dragged up which didn’t help in deciding what would be best for the future of the road, residents and businesses affected.
Returned to an ‘A’ Road?
Cllr Rob Mew welcomed the proposal, but added that he felt the road should be returned to an ‘A’ class road should be opened up to heavy good vehicles, coaches and double decker buses.
The high winds, which started late last night, will not have escaped anyone’s notice on the Wight.
We hear on IW Radio this morning that there are many trees down across the Island, the closest being on the Undercliff Drive, just west of St Lawrence Inn and also at the Western end of Seven Sisters Road also in St Lawrence. (more…)
Joe Duckworth, CEO of the IW Council has asked for the police to get involved in the investigation into the Undercliff Drive, we’ve just heard on IW Radio. We’re on to it and will give you more details when we find them.
UPDATE: We’ve been in touch with the police who have told us
“A file has been passed to the police. They are investigating a complaint by the Isle of Wight Council and are beginning their investigation.”
Not being an expert in police matters, we wondered why this crime unit was being used, but were assured by the police that this is normal for council-related investigations.
The report by Wragge & Co on the Undercliff Drive investigation runs to 75 pages, so will take a while for us to digest. It builds and refers to the previous reports carried out by Addleshaw Goddard, QP, Heath and Sharpe Pritchard the earliest of which started in 2005.
The Wragge Report found “systematic and on-going failures of the Council’s processes and internal controls, and inadequate supervision and line-management of and by a number of officers.” (more…)

Check back to hear their comments first on VentnorBlog.
Many thanks to Peter Stephenson for his report on activities down at Binnel Bay back in May and again, last weekend.
St Lawrence … always a beautiful place to be … Beach Cleaning 2007
About 70-80 residents of St Lawrence gave up their time to collect over 100 bin bags of non bio-degradable rubbish from the beaches at Woody Bay and Binnel Bay St Lawrence this Spring and Summer 2007.
