Ventnor Band and winners of the Nokia IW Festival Battle of the Bands earlier in the year, Kosmik Debris will be performing a set at The Rose Inn next Sunday (21st).
Kosmik Debris, who we first saw play at the opening of the new music room at the Ventnor Youth Centre a couple of years ago have gone from strength to strength since then.
As well as playing the main stage at the Nokia IW Festival earlier this year, they played at many other events, including the V-Fest 2006 and the Streetstyle Festival in 2007
Seeing them perform this Sunday won’t cost you a penny and the band are looking forward to entertaining locals fans and welcome music lovers from further afield.
Actions kicks off at 5pm and runs til 6.30pm. The Rose Inn, Pier Street, Ventnor
The Ventnor Youth and Community Centre has got loads to offer young people on almost every night of the week.
Monday nights offers a drop in for teenagers between 7 and 9.45pm. It’ll only cost you 50p to get in and you can pick up valuable life skills such as learning how to use a washing machine, get advice on relationships and contraception. Enjoy a game of table tennis, football or pool. Alternatively chill out on the sofas and listen to the jukebox
Tuesday sees another drop in evening for teenagers, but with DJ-ing and music production, art, music and trampolining the focus. Bands can use the space for rehearsal and the computers can be used for creative work. Same times and cost to get in.
You remember that VentnorBlog correctly predicted the Surprise Guest for Bestival as The Specials (with a healthy steer from Annie) — others picked up on this and it spread around the media, off and on-line.
The name that we didn’t get was who was the backup special guest that Robby spoke about just in case Mrs Winehouse hadn’t pulled it together to get to, or perform at Bestival on Saturday.
Chris and Jeanie Brown, the team who brought you, amongst other productions, the excellent We Will Rock last year are planning a new show for next year.
Adapted by Jeanie Brown, “All You Need is Love” is an original musical, never been produced on stage before.
It’s a love story about a boy from Liverpool and a girl from America and is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s, so will feature significant events such as the Vietnam war.
It’s all all put together with songs written by the Beatles, so should appeal to a wide range of people.
This coming Sunday the Elgar Society are inviting the public to join them in a walk following in the footsteps of Edward Elgar along the Landslip from Shanklin to Ventnor.
They will be finishing at the honeymoon residence at 2pm for refreshments and the launch of a new book, ‘This Charming Island’, about Edward and Alice Elgar’s honeymoon in that house in 1889.
The Ventnor Music for Fun Festival will take place this year on 20th – 22nd November.
Following the success of last year’s revived event, the Festival will be holding a fund-raising concert on Saturday 20th September, at St Catherine’s Church, Ventnor, starting at 7.30pm.
The concert will be given by previous participants and winners. Entry at the door is £5 to include glass of wine/soft drink.
With Bestival now behind us, normal news service will resume from today.
Thanks to those with no interest in music festivals for their patience, whilst we updated all those who weren’t able to go along to Bestival this weekend.
Thanks also to those who wrote to show their appreciation for the news blips and live video broadcasting.
It was good to know that it was worth it.
It isn’t the very last you’ll be hearing about the festival though, as we have reviews, photos and more video footage to come in due course.
We’re always happy to help spread the word when someone is in need, so when we received the following message from Electro Magnetic Workshop band member, MelinDa, we were happy to oblige. Ed
Are you a bassist looking to join a band of alternative musicians? If so, this might be just the ticket for you.
After the 30th of August gig the Electro Magnetic Workshop would like to progress from heavy backing tracks.
You might well have listened to Aydenne’s podcast yesterday where she outlined her past with the Jazz Festival.
Today’s section cover what she think the future of the Jazz Festival is in Ventnor. The good news is that she think that it’s got a great future - not least because she loves Ventnor!
To say that Aydenne Simone is passionate about Jazz is somewhat of an understatement. She LOVES it.
She’s been a strong supporter of the Jazz Festival in the past, and continues to be now.
When she sings, she’s got a very strong voice and when she spoke to VentnorBlog a few weekends ago, she had some strong opinions about the Ventnor Jazz Festival, which she’s performed at previously.
We’ve split the audio into two separate sections - her experience with the Jazz Festival to date and, following tomorrow, what she sees for the future of the Jazz Festival.
If you’re not going to Bestival this weekend, but would like a bit of the live music action, then make sure you head down to the Ventnor Winter Gardens.
C’mon Everybody is one of the most breathtaking, action packed, colourful, vibrant, dazzling, foot tapping, non-stop rocking rolling shows out there and it’s coming to town this weekend.
This fantastic show should appeal to all ages and will bring back the nostalgia and brilliant music from the 50s and 60s, allowing you to experience first hand the magic time, when the country enjoyed One Big Party.
A major folk music star since 1964, Julie Felix has undoubtedly earned her accolade as Britain’s First Lady of Folk.
Julie has used her music to work tirelessly for many charities and causes, throughout her career and celebrates in her own inimitable style at Acoustics at the Altar on 12th September 2008 at 8pm.
As the first solo folk artist to be signed to a major British record company, Julie Felix’s career has spanned four decades, beginning as Britain’s First Lady of Folk (The London Times) and selling out the Royal Albert Hall, Julie Felix has campaigned tirelessly against war and for Human Rights throughout her career.
If you were unlucky in the competition and are desperate to join in the fun this weekend, get in touch with Sister Grim through the forum or let us know and we’ll pass on your details.
We’ve had loads of entries (on and off the Island) - there’s over thirty lucky ones of you have got the answer right (it wasn’t as easy as it first appeared to be), so we thought we’d try and make it a little special.
We’re going to try and do the selection of the Bestival winner via live video.
Not too sure if it’s going to work … but we’ll give it a go eh?
We’ll try to be as close to 8pm tonight as we can.
While we search for our galoshes, we thought we’d feed you with a little more of what’s coming at Bestival this year (beyond the listing of acts).
Wayne Hemingway, who you may know from his frequent appearances on TV, his running of fashion brand Red or Dead, or his more recent work helping the building business make their buildings more liveable, is playing at Bestival.
This Thursday night sees the very last Making Waves session take place at Ryde Theatre.
Making Waves was the brainchild of those running The Development Suite. Regular readers of VentnorBlog will remember that back in December last year, they put an invitation out to all Island musicians to come forward and take advantage of a great opportunity.
That opportunity was to play on stage at Ryde Theatre, be recorded by IW Radio for later broadcast on the Live and Local Show and be interviewed by Glynn Taylor.
You’ve got your tickets for Bestival, have sorted out your camping gear, organised your fancy dress and now need to make plans of where to meet your mates at what time.
If that’s the case, then the line up announcement below is going to be just what you need.
Bestival have produced another great programme, which you can buy on site along with a laminated version to wear around your neck for easy access.
The programme sports the full line-up in all music and entertainment tents, as well as lots of lovely background info on all the artists which you can take your time reading through over breakfast. The pair will set you back £6 and can’t be bought separately.
With a huge question mark hanging over the likelihood of Amy Winehouse headlining at Bestival this Saturday night - after failing to turn up at the Rock En Seine Festival in Paris this weekend - Rob Da Bank has assured Bestival goers that he has a great fall back band shoved up his sleeve.
Terry Hall was interviewed by BBC Radio London back earlier in the year and confirmed that the band were reforming to play a UK festival in September 2008.
It’s competition time at VentnorBlog again and we’re very excited to be able to offer you a pair of Bestival 2008 tickets.
These puppies are like gold dust at the moment and given the number of people who have asked us whether we know of anyone selling tix, we’re sure this competition is going to be very popular.
Given that the Bestival gates open on Thursday at noon, and that so many people are keen to get their hands on these beauties, we’re setting a limited period in which to enter the comp.
Come back to VB after 12pm tomorrow (Tuesday) and we’ll give you the question. You have to have your answer in before 6pm on Tuesday to qualify.
Don’t forget that the Five O’Clock Shadows, a Shadows tribute band will be appearing at Ventnor Bandstand this coming Sunday between 2.30 and 4pm.
Enjoy a free gig by bringing down a blanket and a bottle, or enjoy some tea and cake from the kiosk by the putting green.
The season of free gigs at the bandstand are almost coming to an end, but the Five O’Clock Shadows, weather permitting will also be appearing on 14th September.
Don’t forget that the Icandi crew are back in town tonight.
Once again featuring contemporary artwork from Paul Brown, Kitty Linnington, Kim Purton, Patrick Wood, Rachael Berry and many more.
Expect Electronica, Retro Pop, Funk, Old School, Dub and Ambient Lounge from Mystery Guest DJ’s and all the usual fun and games including Paint Rally, Punters Gallery and ICANDI shop.

Don’t forget that one of the greatest Rock’n'Roll shows is coming to the Ventnor Winter Gardens on 6th September.
C’mon Everybody is a breathtaking, action packed, colourful, vibrant, dazzling, foot tapping, non-stop rocking rolling show that you just can’t miss.
It appeals to ALL ages and brings back all the fun, nostalgia and brilliant music from the 50s and 60s and allows you to experience first hand the magic time, when the country enjoyed One Big Party.
Thanks To Alex Mann from the Musician’s Union for sending through this call out to all MU members on the Wight. Following this meeting at Ryde Theatre, will be the last Making Waves of the season and possibly ever (at Ryde Theatre). If you can, do go along and show your support. Ed
Calling all MU members on the Isle of Wight
The East & South East region would like to invite all MU members living and working on the Isle of Wight to an open meeting, due to take place on Thursday 4th September at Ryde Theatre.
The meeting will feature a presentation and Q&A session hosted by Paul Burrows and Alex Mann of the East & South East region of the MU, and will also give members on the island a chance meet MU officials face to face and discuss issues relating to any aspect of their working lives as musicians.
