Praise Be to the VB. - The Development Suite
After her debut at the Quay Arts in February last year, and appearances as far apart as Brighton, Italy and the Isle of Wight Jazz Festival, Edana returns to her home ground for a special fundraising evening of jazz, Latin and lounge music, to be recorded live.
The year’s been a tough one and Edana’s voice is full of heartbreak, but it’s wiser, richer, more soulful.
Tonight she is joined on stage by a wonderful band of talented musicians including the fabulous sax player, Sarah Bolter, who performed with Edana at the Anthony Minghella tribute concert in Cowes earlier this year as well as Steve Thompson on bass, Andy Strickland on guitar and Quay Arts Director, Mick Smith on piano.
Quay Arts presents singer Helen Porter and pianist Pete Rosser who bring you a concert of music beginning with the Four Cabaret Songs by Benjamen Britten and WH Auden.
Also included are art songs from the 1930s and 1940s by Kurt Weill and American musical theatre genius, Stephen Sondheim.
The second half moves into jazz territory, and includes new songs written by Helen and Pete in collaboration with lyricist Amanda Smith.
Whether you’re in love, looking for love, lost in love or just plain fed up with love, this is a concert to inspire you on your way!

Quay Arts presents Alex Roberts, a musician whose musical compass points to each degree.
It is not his outstanding musicianship that is driving him, but something more subtle. What’s driving this artist is the song.
The timeless nature of Roberts’ musical charm provides the perfect vehicle for expressing his lyrical musings.
In the fashion of the troubadour or bard Roberts crafts stories, love songs, ballads, spiritual insights, or protests into a mesmerising web of song.
However it is on stage that Roberts is best appreciated. A comfortable and engaging performer he is quickly becoming known as an act not to miss and a hard one to follow.
This week is National Pathology Week and to help raise awareness of this vital contribution to modern medicine, events have been organised on Saturday at St Mary’s Hospital. Alison Toney from the IWPCT tells us more. Ed
What’s Pathology All About?
If you have had a blood test, been treated for an infection or perhaps someone you know is being treated for cancer, you will have had contact with Pathology – even if you didn’t realise it.
Increasingly, pathologists are responsible for the care of patients, for example those with leukaemia, anaemias or immune and metabolic disorders.
Without the detective work of the Pathology team investigating disease, there could be no firm answers, and improving or even maintaining the quality of medical care would be impossible.

Plans to unite with witches, ghouls and yet more zombies means that their end destination will be Haunted iCandi at Joe’s in Newport where they’ll be able to dance their rotting socks off to the sounds of electronica, retro pop, funk and dub.

Lucky Stars is the track most remembered by us, for those who have idea what we’re going on about - thanks to YouTube, here’s a reminder of Dean singing with Denise Marsa.

Just when everyone was thinking that the idea had passed, we’ve found that it looks like the disposal of County Hall could be back on the cards.
In their most recent let’s flog off what might be worth something report, otherwise known as the Capital Receipts Programme, near the bottom of the document is an entry for “County Hall and Newport Harbour” (sic).
The reason for sale is listed as “Maximise capital receipt, regeneration of Newport Harbour and County Hall sites and enable relocation of Council.”
To that end, we’re told that “Option appraisals currently being investigated which may lead to disposal or retention.”
The IW Council has published its latest list of properties and land that it owns, that it has decided to sell off over the next three years (see previous coverage).
There are now 42 items on the list, but that includes entries like “Residential Rationalisation” - management speak of the highest order, whose meaning could be innocent or something quite worrying.
Others on the list include a couple of car parks in Newport, New Street Car Park and South Street Car Park.
