As well as National Black History month, October is also the month for raising awareness for the excellent Breast Cancer Campaign.
It’s a sad fact that most of will know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, which accounts for nearly one in three of all cancers in women, which is probably why the Breast Cancer Campaign has gained the support of many Island businesses over the next month.
Thinking that your place is a bit messy and needs a tidy up?
You ain’t got nuffin’ to worry about mate, judging by a collection of extraordinary photos that we came across. (Yes, that is a bedroom in the photo on the left!)
You may have read our first-to-publish report of the opening and adjournment of the Coroner’s inquest into the sad death of Amphon Tuckey due to eating Death Cap mushrooms.
Here’s the video report that we did directly after the inquest had adjourned. We initially thought that there had been technical problem with the video, so didn’t publish it to you.
We now realise that it runs OK, so bring it to you now.
The slightly faltering presentation style is due to me having to refer to my notes, having just left the inquest. It felt important to get the news our, rather than be polished.
We plan to bring you more live video coverage in the future, so stay tuned to the VentnorBlog channel.
Will Treend will be running another of his excellent TM Retreats at the beginning of November in Bonchurch.

We’ve heard yesterday on IW Radio news that the IW Council voted on Tuesday night to rejected a government proposal to allow all school children and over 60s to swim for free in public swimming baths.

The Isle of Wight council has a budget of over £300 MILLION pounds a year.
Way back in April (boy, how time flies) we went along to the Island Premiere of Gum Fu: Enter The Clinic, a youth led project commissioned for the IOW Chlamydia Screening Programme.
Andy, well known across the Island as a music technology teacher and for being involved in various youth projects, joined the Streets Ahead film project four years ago, but when another member left the team in September 2007, Andy was left to manage the Gum Fu project on his own without any previous filming experience. Despite this, he managed, with the help of the young people from the Streets Ahead Team, to pull together this fantastic Chlamydia awareness film. (more…)

Continuing with the podcasts from the Gum Fu premiere held at Quay Arts last month, we caught up with more of the Streets Ahead Production team after the screening to find out what they get out of being involved in film production.
They were an enthusiastic bunch of young people who told us how much fun they have being involved with the Streets Ahead projects. Their advice was that so long as you stay committed to your task there are many good times to be had. (more…)
Following the Island premiere of GumFu: Enter the Clinic last month, we caught up with Simon Dear, who has the fantastic job title of Commissioner for Positive Activities for IOW Council.
Simon was extremely enthusiastic about the project which involved many young people taking part in getting the message about STDs out to the community.
He went on to say that having the involvement of young people is a fantastic opportunity and the result, a great example of what can be achieved when you include them in the process. (more…)

Something that has been brought to our attention via the forum is that the High Street newsagents, SLV News (formerly TC News) has an application in with the council to change from selling Newspapers, sweets and fizzy pop to selling alcohol.
From looking at the application form and plans, it appears that they intend to take over the Country Kitchen (No. 37) and extend into there, expanding the business considerably.
From comments on the forum, it’s clear that many feel that another source of alcohol in town is unnecessary. (more…)
