With all quiet on the public front over the last few months as far as Ventbag has been concerned, we were pleased to receive this update over the weekend below from the Ventbag team. Ed
Ventbag is the project name for Ventnor becoming the first town on the Island to be Plastic Carrier Bag Free.
This unpaid volunteer project is supported both by Ventnor Town Council and the Isle of Wight Council.
As we set an original (tough target) of achieving this in September this year, we thought it would be a good idea to give everyone an update on progress.
The biggest challenge we faced was looking at the production of an alternative bag for Ventnor. This was planned to be an organic fair trade sourced cotton bag.

At Monday’s Town Council Meeting, Leader of the Council David Pugh was questioned by Cllr Brian Lucas about the lack of a Tourist Information Centre in Ventnor.
As residents will know, the Tourist Information Centre which was previously housed at the Coastal Visitors Centre in Dudley Road, closed nearly three years ago.
With Ventnor being a holiday destination, the lack of tourist info didn’t sit well with the town, so last year, Season’s newsagents in the High Street kindly agreed to display information in their window and help with tourist enquiries.

Hybrid Marine, a company based at the IW Enterprise Hub in Newport are, we hear from the Economic Partnership, launching a new product at the Southampton Boat Show.
We’re no expert about these things, so the prospect of a new diesel-electric hybrid marine propulsion system for leisure craft is not something that excites us immensely, but seeing new innovation coming out from the Island is something we’re always happy to celebrate.

Has anyone else noticed the novel approach that one Ventnor home-owner has taken in selling their property?
Rather than marketing the the actual house, the home-owner (a friend of ours) has made the decision to focus on the view from the property. After all, it’s one of Ventnor’s biggest selling points.
As with many properties in Ventnor, the view from this one in Upper Gills Cliff Road is stunning.
It looks out over the Victorian rooftops across town, and then beyond to the huge expanse of beautiful blue sea - or rather dark and atmospheric - if you’re looking today.

We’re really pleased to announce another advertiser has come on board with VentnorBlog.
AJ Wells and their sister company, Charnwood, are two of the most respected companies on the Island.
They design and manufacture on the Island using skills from the Island and distribute their products worldwide.
Hand warming
We’ve worked with them and design company, Didomi, to create an animated advert. Pretty good, eh?
If you’re feeling a bit chilly, you can hold your hands in front of your monitor to warm up to. Clearly, having an actual own Charnwood woodburner at home would do an even better job
Advertise with VentnorBlog
We’ve been really busy with maintaining the coverage and number of stories that we put out on a daily basis, so haven’t yet had the opportunity to contact companies around the Island to let them know of the benefits that VB could bring them. That doesn’t mean that we don’t welcome advertisers.
If you’d like to benefit from your company being displayed over 25,000 a day on VentnorBlog, just get in touch with us on 898 777. We’ll be happy to help.

Organic Egg Farmer, Matt Bowman is flying the flag for the Isle of Wight in Farming UK today.
As has been covered in the media previously, Matt is the only Soil Association certified organic egg producer to be selling his eggs to Tesco.
In the interview, Matt tells readers of Farming UK how he manages to juggle running the ‘Stoneground Flour Company’ whilst introducing livestock, in the form of 400 birds, earlier this year.
Well done to Matt for his success and achievements, as well as raising the profile of the Isle of Wight.

After the Ventnor Town Council meeting last night we caught up with members of the public who had asked questions of the Town Council, in response to letters published in the SW Chronicle regarding a booking from the organisers of the Jazz Festival for April 2009 to be held at the Winter Gardens.
One such person was John Wortham, a man who has been fighting the corner of creditors for three years.
He originally got involved in the saga as musician friends of his, Julian Mark Stringle and Digby Fairweather had to wait eight months for payment from the organisers.

Back in February we applied to the Ventnor Town Council (VTC) for a grant towards a new project which we hope will be of great benefit to Ventnor town.
We are in the process of creating a new online visitors guide to Ventnor, highlighting everything a visitor to the town might need to know. It’ll be a comprehensive guide to accommodation, restaurants, services, events, etc.- with visitors comments and reviews.
The outline budget for the project is quite considerable, so when an advertisement calling for people to apply for grants from the VTC came up, we thought we’d apply for £1,000 as a contribution to the large set up costs.

Here’s a great tip for drivers that Simon spotted from the Institute for Advanced Motorists Magazine recently.
Apparently, if you reverse into a parking space, you could save yourself possibly up to £2 per week on fuel, as well as practising safe driving procedures.
We read that if you reverse your car out of a space when the engine is cold, it uses around 20 to 25 times more petrol in the first few seconds than it does when warm and they tell us that average five year old car takes a minute and a half to warm up.

Island MP, Andrew Turner is not a happy man. Well, not happy with one particular business on the Island.
Everyone is well aware of the increased petrol/diesel prices at the moment and may have heard how some supermarkets have slashed their petrol prices.
Tesco are offering 5p off per litre, but you have to £50 in store first. What Andrew is not happy about it the fact that infant milk formulae is excluded from counting towards the £50 spend.

At the last meeting of Ventnor Town Council, just after the public were excluded from the Winter Gardens Management Committee, the next agenda item to be discussed was the 2009 Jazz Festival - if they would sanction the hire of the Winter Gardens.
You might remember the black cloud over the festival with unpaid debts from both the 2007 Jazz Festival and the 2007 Folk and Blues Festival.
Chair of the Winter Gardens Management Committee (WGMC), Maureen Cawley, had agreed to pencil the 2009 festival in to take place at the Winter Gardens, subject to there being no negative publicity and all debts paid by September 2008.

At the end of the event, we caught up with Chief Executive of IWEP, Graham Biss to talk about what the Touchdown Lounge has to offer.
