First up is March by Geraldine Brooks.
Well worth reading – it made me want to read more of hers. It was well researched
I knew very little about the American Civil War and had not realised that it was not so black and white as it seemed – forgive the pun! I was interested in the references to actual historical figures of the time
I thought the observation of the relationship between husband and wife (and the status of women) was interesting – they weren’t communicating on really important matters even though both regarded their marriage as an equal partnership
You don’t have to have read Little Women to enjoy it – I thought the characters were well observed
There seemed to be references to nature and nurture and the “noble savage” – Grace Clements is a remarkable character but wasn’t March arrogant?
