Blue Flags Flies High Over Ventnor Beach
Monday, 16th June, 2008 at 2:02 pm, Isle of Wight
The skies were blue, the sun was shining and there was a great turnout this afternoon for the official hoisting of the new Blue Flag for Ventnor.
Around 45 members of the public gathered beside the pumping station, as we awaited the arrival of Leader of the Council, David Pugh.
He gave a short speech, praising the efforts of everyone involved, particularly the Mayoress, Susan Scoccia, before presenting her with the Blue Flag.
The Mayoress went on to thank everyone involved in helping meet the criteria for the Blue Flag status.
It was a long list and we lost count of how many, although some people say there were 14 in all, from Blake family who look after the beach so well, to Mark Compton-Hall to the Council Parks and Beach department, and from the beach safety group to the library, before finishing with “that’s just about everyone that I’d like to thank.”
With a little help from her friends, the flag was then attached and hoisted to a round of applause.
We have a short podcast with David Pugh to follow and possibly some video coming out later today for those who missed this landmark event for Ventnor.

Not as far as we know. In the interview we’ve just done with DP (for the Blue flag) he said he’s sticking to Shanklin, so prob not.
Ex-CEO Joe Duckworth has/had one … and it’s up for rent now!

45
45? FORTY-FIVE??
So if you take away all the Councillors who turned up, Ward, JFB, Williams, etc., VT Councillors, Lucas, Cawley, Robinson etc., plus spouses where appropriate, there would have been what, 15? 20? people there.
We live in an age of apathy.

To be quite honest Bertie, I was surprised that so many people did turn up on a Monday lunchtime. I though before going that I might be only one of a handful. Lets face it a lot of people do not have much interest in the area they live in. It would be great if everywhere had such a strong community spirit and so many well supported events as places like St Lawrence and Bembridge does.

“he’s sticking to Shanklin”
Of course. I was forgetting he needs his Mum to do the cooking (and washing probably, but let’s not go there)…

“Ex-CEO Joe Duckworth has/had one”
Senior members of the Politburo only, then?
