Big Green Picnic

Tuesday, 22nd January, 2008 at 2:47 pm, Isle of Wight

24, May 2008to25, May 2008

As part of the Council’s vision to turn the Isle of Wight into the first Eco-Island, there will be tons of initiatives coming out from County Hall over the next few months.

Big Green PicnicOne which caught our attention last week was the launch of the Big Green Picnic (we’ll be publishing some podcasts later today from the event).

The Big Green What, you ask? The Big Green Picnic (BGP) is set to become the Island’s premier, high-profile, environmental event this year.

Taking place over the weekend of 24/25 May, the BGP aims to inspire the Island’s population to embrace the idea of sustainable living in order to reduce our carbon emissions and help save the planet, man.

So what can you expect to see at the BGP?

Well, there will be all sorts going on over the weekend from 10am-7pm each day. Expect marquees representing local produce, transport, arts and crafts, home and gardening, beauty and health, waste and recycling (natch), energy and water, construction and the natural environment.

On the entertainment front, there’ll be a small music stage with local musicians keeping the happy vibe going throughout the day, as well as other performers.

The organisers hope the BGP will host exhibitions of environmental art, there’ll be a local heat of the solar car challenge (more details to come soon), and if you don’t get round to bringing your own picnic with you, there will be lots of local healthy food to purchase.

If you like getting your hands dirty, plenty of participatory workshops will be running using natural and recycled materials.

Finally, there’ll be a Cinema tent where you’ll get the chance to become better informed through sustainability and green films.

Of course, we’ll bring you more info as well get it, but make sure you stick this one in your diaries and don’t be off the Wight that weekend.
