Big Green Picnic: Podcasts From The Launch
Tuesday, 22nd January, 2008 at 5:41 pm, Isle of Wight
As mentioned earlier, we were at the launch of the Big Green Picnic last week. All the Island’s movers and shakers as far as green issues and sustainability go, were there to hear what the council is planning for the One Big Picnic, their high profile environmental event in May.
After David Pugh and Joe Duckworth had given their speeches, we worked our way through the audience or pounced on people queuing to make their ‘green pledge’ (everyone was invited to strip their plates of meat and have their souls soles painted green before slapping them down on sheets of paper), to grab some vox-pops.
We asked one simple question ….
“What does Eco-Island mean to you?”
If you’re interested in hearing what Ellen MacArthur thinks or maybe Ray from the Footprint Trust, Mick Smith from Quay Arts or maybe the Marketing managers from Vestas or Wightlink then put your feet up and sit back and listen by clicking on the play button below.
We want to hear everyone’s view. Now you’ve heard what it means to some of the people above, why not tell us what it means to you. Leave us a comment.

I applaud this drive to make IOW an eco island because many people I meet here seem to have already accepted what needs to be done. This event however sounds like fun and I am afraid being Green ain’t fun. It includes a large degree of inconvenience, cost, lobbying of authorities , and a different lifestyle. Giving plastic bags the heaveho and using low energy bulbs is a good stsrt, but we must be careful not to of kid ourselves that it is sufficient(green wash) We are using up resources as if the planet was nearly 3 times as big as it is. Come to Ventnor for a holiday. So much less stressful than toiling through Heathrow and burning carbon all the way to Spain, or wherever. We even have Tapas here.
