Bestival Bands Competition Review: Part Three
Friday, 27th July, 2007 at 5:25 pm, Isle of Wight
If you’ve read part one and two of my Bestival Bands Competition review, reading on should make sense …
Keeping the Ventnor vibe going, Hugo Frusslinky followed next. Having listened to their handful of tracks on MySpace, I was itching to see them perform live.
And boy, they didn’t disappoint. Kicking off with Holiday, it was clear that these guys (and gal) had an excellent rapport with each other.
The dynamism on stage was electric, and that wasn’t just the guitars (strike me down if I get too cheesy).
Heather is blessed with an incredible voice. I was going to say that she certainly knows how to play the crowd, but I don’t think she was playing, I think it all comes naturally.
She’s one sexy and musically talented lady who will go far with the right breaks. I know it’s unfair to pick out only one or two people to comment on, because the band is made up of four, but Jono-not-Bono surpassed himself.
I do love watching guitarists get into their music, and pleased to see that he’s been practicing his lunges. That man must have super toned thighs!
As soon as they started playing, they were clear winners. The crowd went crazy for them, and it wasn’t just all their mates making the noise.
Someone better sign these guys fast, because they are going to be snapped up pretty soon.
Top notch, Hugo. Look forward to seeing you on the main stage in September.
I got a bit distracted after that and mixed up as to who DJ’d next. I think it was another Ventnorian (yes, we have so much talent down here), Mandy ‘Sugar’ Hill who was in fact well known local DJ Dan Hill.
Once again having previously heard him play out, I knew he had some top tunes to spin.
I missed some of the set whilst yabbering away, but heard from one of my chaperones that he pulled off a well rounded set and kept the crowd going throughout. No surprise then, that he was chosen as DJ of the night.
Well done Mandy. Look forward to catching your set at Bestival and hope to see you in drag next time.
Coming up in part four, Puzzle Muteson and Renegade.
