Bestival Bands : Bastila and afterdarkdnb win
Thursday, 20th July, 2006 at 12:26 am, Isle of Wight
I know .. it was Wednesday night … what on earth do you want to be doing heading up to Ryde?
Well don’t worry your little selves, cos we did and we’re glad to share the news that a Ventnor band won the comp!
Who knows how to pronounce their name? I thought I did … but then I heard several interpretations tonight at Ryde Theatre, but one thing I do know for sure is that they … ‘Bastila’ (pronounced by me as Bas - tila) won the band comp and a pair of chavs afterdarkdnb (Thanks Renegade, we weren’t sure which ones they were) won the DJ comp.
Well done to everyone involved, as I thought you were all pretty darn good … although, personally, I thought Renegade should’ve won the DJ comp.
Great visuals from Ventnor I provided the backdrop to the stage.

Hey, thanks for the compliment but afterdarkdnb Aka “the chavs” did a pretty good set.
one of the judges reasons for me not winning was “i looked like i was checking my emails” lol! so they obviously wernt checking out what i was actually doing, being trying to mix with crap headphones and serious latency!! i suspect they just have a thing against laptops…
Well done to bastila as well!
Any feedback would be great leave me a message @

While I’m a big fan of Ableton and similar mixing software, it is noticable that the change of movement from artists performing on a stage, to a single DJ’s playing from a laptop shifts to become static.
Maybe you need some go-go dancers - and not I’m not putting myself forward!

Just to say I saw Bastila perform at a SNAP party for middle school age kids in Sandown last night with Nicky. SNAP for those that don’t know, stands for Say No and Phone. Nicky and I were invited to get a better insight into drug education for kids. Taking that aside, I missed them on Saturday as I had to be in hospital last week for tests, so was delighted to see what I could not see at V.Fest. I thought they were brilliant. The kids went hyper and the rather formidable security team who kept them inside until close time said to me the noise they made as they went hyper almost exceeded safe decibel levels!!!!
Amongst the other acts we also saw one which really impressed us. Billy Phillips, which we thought would do well in Ventnor. He was the winner of South Coast Idol.
The kids loved it and the sets were the same as those delivered to adults. One of the girls on security team who normally patrols Bogeys etc was a bit dubious about some of the lyrics of one of the bands, but fun was had by all.
Always being a curious one, I asked one of the boys in the security team, who looked seriously frightening in size, how one of his colleagues, a little slip of a girl could handle out of control men, in a bar, and he said she could restrain him (at least 16 stone and all muscle) instantly, as she is an expert in martial arts. (The future is female comes to mind!) We got all the low down on how the security teams work across the island, what they do, what they don’t do, and how they partner with the Police, all quite enlightening! Seems it has taken a while to find earpiece comms that are comfortable to wear.
Wish Nicky and I had a camera when we left the huge tent, as an almost magical mist was rising from the lake opposite the Dinosaur Museum. It was a beautiful sight under a clear night sky.
