Anne Does Ventnor and Old Rockers Proud

Thursday, 7th June, 2007 at 11:16 am, Isle of Wight

If you travel through upper Ventnor regularly, you’ll be familiar with the ever changing murals on side of a house on the corner of York Road and Newport Road.

The owner, Anne has been painting murals on her wall for many years, they are always topical and always expertly executed. Since the celebration mural of the Ventnor Railway Station, the wall has been blank for some time.

Anne Does Ventnor and Old Rockers Proud

We’ve all been waiting eagerly to see what the theme will be this time round, and it is of course, The Isle of Wight Music Festival. This year, Anne has focused her attention on two old rockers, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and painted brilliant caricatures of them on a huge scale.

The artwork has raised some controversy though, with one neighbour, ‘Harry’, emailing Alex ‘Big Al’ Dyke’s radio programme yesterday slamming the mural. He claims that it brings the area down and affects the value of surrounding properties. One other person wrote in to complain, but there were tons who called and wrote in offering support for what Anne does.

This recent mural (yes David ‘Doc’ Holmes, the word is ‘mural’ not Muriel) only took Anne two days to complete. They never stay up for too long, so if you haven’t seen it yet, get yourselves over to upper Ventnor and take a butchers in person.

I saw her starting this when I was driving into Ventnor one day. It’s a great piece of work, well done Anne.

Unfortunately, guys, “Harry” does not exist. He is yet another figment of the imagination to stir up controversy where none exists.
To quote a regular contributor to the forum, without prejudice, in my humble opinion, “Harry” was meant to refer to a local dignitary who lives but a few doors away from Anne.
This was just another puerile attempt, without prejudice, in my humble opinion, by two middle aged wannabeefamous small time local radio presenters, to belittle Ventnor.
A vocation at which they like to think they excel. Do not rise to the bait.
Without prejudice, in my humble opinion.
I believe the Stones are coming to see it.

Another stunning Anne Turner mural! - she deserves to be better known. I really like the way the Lips theme is incorporated in the Island outline.

Absolutely superb - as usual. It is a wall to behold when the murals are done and I for one miss them when the wall is blank. To the 2 old farts objecting, get a life for heavens sake.

Iam so proud of my neighbour and best friend, Annie. We have been friends for over 15 years now and i have been on painting sessions with her all over the Island. Her artwork is brilliant and the murals at I.o.W Pearl, Arreton Barns and even the Hospital are well worth seeing! She would have loved to have seen the Rolling Stones but unfortunatly her tickets were fake, so she was turned away like 7000 others. Her son played yesterday on the Platform one stage which she also missed . But nevertheless, she will continue to please the public with her talent and maybe one day she will get something in return!!!!!

I am a huge fan of Anne’s, her paintings are terrific and i hink she is very talented..my only complaint.i think she does leave it a bit too long in between paintings.

Well done Anne..it is a pleasure to drive past your house……..long may she paint

Call it what you will. Graffiti, vandalism or mural, this is brilliant and ‘art’ like this can be used to great effect. Remain sensitive Anne but don’t be put off

  9. Linlin Says:

It’s great and typifies the Ventnor community of artists and musicians. Such a shame to have a few elderly and narrowminded moaners spoil it. She should be given an arts grant and commissioned to do more!

  10. We Will Rock You: Review : Ventnor Blog Says:

[...] Several rounds of applause should also go to the band who, between the seven of them, supported the singers incredibly well. Praise to Val Hayward for producing the show, Pete Back and Jamie Fothergill for sound and lighting, Steph Crosby and Adi Volney for makeup, Sue Golding for Costumes, the excellent Ann Turner for scenery painting, Charlie Horrill for choreography and the stage crew, Nathan Mellow, Richard Cutler, Penny Worley and John Worley.
