Alex Dyke: “I Don’t Want To Hear A Black Man On Radio 4″: UPDATED

Wednesday, 27th February, 2008 at 1:32 pm, Isle of Wight

We just switched on to listen to the Alex Dyke phone-in at 12:55 on IW Radio and were stunned when we thought we heard him say — when referring to a Radio 4 continuity announcer — “I don’t want to hear a black man on Radio 4.”

We may have missed the context of this comment, but it’s pretty hard to imagine what context this could be used in, that would make it acceptable.

We know he tries to be a shock jock and we’ve heard a few comments by him in the past that have been pretty close to the knuckle … but were stunned by this one.

Anyone else hear this and can fill in the detail?

UPDATE: We’ve been in touch with IW Radio this morning (28.Feb) to follow up on this. They hope to get back to us later today about it.

  1. seb Says:

i assume this relates to the one and only neil nunes.

this is a hot-button topic so i’m steering well-clear of it!
    —–
Jamaican Neil Nunes, with his Caribbean accent, has provoked the biggest controversy among Radio 4’s sensitive audience since controller Mark Damazer axed Fritz Spiegl’s ‘UK theme’ from its early morning slot.

Some describe Nunes’s voice as grating and inappropriate for the station, while others dismiss this as a ‘Little Englander’ attitude. The kind of angry exchanges erupting on the station’s website are unusual for Radio 4’s urbane followers

  2. Frank Says:

I heard that show. Disgusting comments. Amazed that people can say that on the radio. There was also a lot of discussion about Poles taking all of the jobs at Tescos. There’s plenty of good reason that lots of people don’t like Alex Dyke.

  3. Margaret Says:

Not in the least bit surprising. Just do what sensible people do and switch off.

  4. Susan Says:

I’m embarrased to think that any visitors to the island might have heard this kind of talk on the islands only radio station. It does nothing to improve the impression that mainlanders have of us as all being small minded bigots.

  5. A Bloke Says:

This is typical of PC-types. So what if he don’t want to hear a black man on the radio? This is political corectness gone mad.

  6. shuba Says:

    Mr Bloke

Making a prejudicial comment, isolating a minority person, highlighting the colour of his skin ( would he say that he does’nt like listening to a “red skinned person”)ignoring all other skills the black man may have had on the basis of his skin colour and choosing to make it public on the radio, has nothing to do with PC but everything to do with ignorance, prejudice, inability to accept and celebrate difference and a complete lack of understanding of the role of the radio in society.

If he made this comment to a friend, privately, in a private setting, that is another matter and irrelevant here. But that he chose to make this comment on air, using the radio as a platform to voice his personal beliefs has nothing to do with PC but everything to do with prejudice.

The radio is a public service site, heard by millions of people. As such what is said and spoken about requires sensitivity and discretion both of which Alex Dyke has never demonstrated.

  7. Craigy Says:

well said shuba - alex dyke has a duty to act responsibly on the radio, can’t imagine what people listening think of his comments - it’s not big and it’s not clever - even if he thinks it is.

  8. Jim Bob Says:

I stopped listening to the idiot years ago.

  9. L Pinkerton Says:

    Alex who?

  10. Margie Says:

He not been taken off the air yet? Someone told me he was insulting people again today - what a prat.

  11. Y O Y Says:

Good one L! True Jib Bob - like most of the Island!

There’s only about 39k people listening to the whole radio station in a month according to the latest figures - and that includes those on the mainland!

Dyke and his mate think they owns the island - couldn’t be further from the truth.

  12. Upset Isle of Wight radio listener Says:

Yes, I heard that show, and today he was up to his old tricks and insulting people including myself.
The show is a disgrace, not only showing such terrible prejudice and discrimination towards black people but also towards people from the mainland. Alex and Doc are so narrow minded, I will no longer be listening to the show. I do like Ian Mac, at least he has some decency and kindness. Alex dyke has gone too far, I didnt realise how unpopular his show was, I am relieved about that as they have made me out to be a complete idiot this week and I am very upset, and all for simply voicing my opinion. The show does nothing for the Isle of Wight, nor for the radio station, and I think it should be boycotted.
I thought Alex was a decent bloke, stupid me! I have now come to my senses.

  13. Paul Says:

Excellent piece of work by Mr Dyke. Anything that gets po-faced types like shuba wagging their fingers and launching into a tedious lecture has to be welcomed.

The airwaves are awash with dullards who toe the right-on line, therefore the likes of Alex Dyke are to be welcomed. Cue cries of BNP, xenophobe, etc., blah de blah. Zzzzzzzz……

  14. Jeremy Says:

So Paul, you think making racist comments is non-pc, not being right-on?

    Wrong.

It’s illegal. Plain and simple. I for one, hope Dyke gets pulled up by Ofcom for this - it’s about time he realised that making offensive remarks such as he does is not acceptable behaviour.

I’m amazed that the radio station hasn’t done anything about him yet.

  15. upset isle of wight radio listener Says:

Paul, His comments are thick and arrogant, it would be wrong if he had made such a comment about white people, black people or any other. His low intellectual level and yours are extremely evident.
We are all human beings, and each deserve the same respect as one another.
His comment was narrow minded, we are all entitled to do what we like in this world and if that means a black man becoming a dj on bbc radio 4 then so be it. Who cares, get a life Paul and Alex. Political correctness is not the issue here, his comment was racist.

  16. Sandra Says:

Have to agree with mr/mrs upset above. I used to listen to Dyke every day, including when he did the nightime show (which i first thought was a spoof), but can’t stand listening to him anymore.

  17. Life Without Alex Dyke: It’s Dreamy | Ventnor Blog:Isle of Wight Says:

[…] Some of us who have not been given air-time view this as a badge of pride - we’d rather not be associated with someone with such disgusting views. […]

  18. Alex Dyke: I’m Here To Stay, Get Used To It | Ventnor Blog:Isle of Wight Says:

[…] However, as he turned to leave the room, Big Al was heard muttering under his breath Besides, no-one else would have me! […]

  19. Craigy Says:

I hear that Jazzie B WON’T be going on the phone-in today as Alex had suggested earlier in the week, perhaps he’d read about Alex’s views of not wanting to hear a black man on RADIO 4?

  20. James P Says:

    I don’t suppose Radio 4 wants him as a listener, either…

  21. Farmersboy Says:

Alex dyke is a prat, but at least he is on the same times, same days, use the knob (no not Alex) and find anyother station, even try BFBS and find out what the real heroes are doing.

  22. kj Says:

I wouldn’t worry too much about Alex Dyke….if you find this offensive you wait to the real bigots and racists get on the Island. One of them got 180 votes in Ryde North Council Elections and with the cuurent mob creating a void in Island politics, I fully expect more scum to stand.

Alex was a fool to say what he said..but we all know that.
