ALAN TITCHMARSH LAUNCHES ISLE OF WIGHT NATIONAL YEAR OF READING
Thursday, 10th April, 2008 at 11:28 am, Isle of Wight
THE ISLE of Wight’s newly elected High Sheriff and popular TV personality and author Alan Titchmarsh will be launching the Isle of Wight’s National Year of Reading at a book signing and short talk taking place at Lord Louis Library in Newport on Friday, April 25, from 3.30 to 4.30pm.
Mr Titchmarsh who is the author of best selling fiction and non-fiction works will be talking about his love of reading and signing copies of his books which will be on sale at the library courtesy of Waterstones.
Throughout the year, library staff are aiming to build a “reading Island” during the National Year of Reading.
The scheme is not just about people reading books but also about celebrating the enjoyment that reading can bring to peoples lives in all forms of media including the internet, magazines, newspapers or musical lyrics.
Each month at libraries across the Island, there will be themed activities for children and adults with everything from author visits to literary walks and competitions, quizzes and children’s activities.
25th April also sees the launch of a national library membership drive which aims to encourage 350,000 new members to join libraries nationwide.
Mr Titchmarsh said: “Reading is an extremely important element in my life and has been since I was a young boy.
“It is fun and accessible to everyone of all ages thanks to the network of public libraries where there is something to read that will suit everyone.
“I am delighted to support the National Year of Reading here on the Island and would encourage everyone to use their library service — you will be surprised at what you will find!”

I read with interest that Alan Titchmarsh is adding his support to the National Year of Reading. I am an Usborne Book representative and my team and I are, here on the Island and across the UK are all involved in promoting the National Year of Reading. Last week we ran a fun afternoon at the Ryde Castle Hotel. We had an activity session going for the children with competitions. We also encouraged the children to recycle a good condition book they had finished with and rewarded them with a dip in the pirates treasure chest. These books will be recycled for charity. We also ran an Usborne book fair and had many bargains avaiable. We are hoping to run more events through the year to raise literacy standards. We are running a community book pledge where local businesses are donating books to local schools and organisations and have already received lots of pledges. We will be giving a FREE book to every school that was represented at our event. We are keen to get lots more FREE books out into the community! More details at http://www.lynsbookbi.co.uk
