02, Mar 2009 in Island-wide, Overseas, Politics, Travel
We had a chance to quickly catch up with Andrew Turner, MP for the Isle of Wight, at the Hedgelaying competition, the day after the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) announced that their Market Study into the Isle of Wight Ferries.
He was obviously pleased that the work that he and Carole had put into collating and submitting the information to the OFT had produced some results. Quite rightly so, only 5% of the submission to the OFT get to this point of attention.

Watch TV and Save The Planet?
22, Feb 2009 in Business, Community, Conservation, Environment, Media
Want to do your bit to save the planet, and still be a couch potato?
Well, if you missed staying in on Friday night (20 February) for BBC2′s Natural World then sadly you won’t be able to catch the usual Sunday evening repeat, because for some reason they’re not doing it this week.
However, you can still catch it online on the BBC’s iPlayer (in the next 23 days).
Give it a watch and it might inspire you to get up and outside after all!

The Ancient Craft Of Hedgelaying In The 21st Century
13, Mar 2007 in Environment
You will remember that we got very excited about the recent Hedgelaying competition in Blackwater. It might not be very ‘street’, but without skills like this on the Island, our environment could end up looking very different – imagine all those hedges, which provide homes for wonderful wildlife, all gone and bog standard fences in their place. Well, one of the contestants, Oz Hoskyns, who took third place in the competition and trains hedgelaying to the amateur enthusiast through his business Hobbit House, has very kindly agreed to write a piece for the blog … and here it follows.

Thanks everyone for your patience whilst we switched servers this week.
We’d been having problems with the old server (you might’ve noticed it was getting pretty slow and chucking out errors every so often), so we took the opportunity to switch whilst being away for a couple of days.
Annual Isle of Wight Hedgelaying Competition
23, Feb 2007 in Community, Outta Town, Sports
As we were driving back from Newport on Thursday, just past Blackwater, we noticed some poor souls in a very wet field who seemed to be working hard at laying at hedge.
Well, we couldn’t resist, so turned the car around and went back to investigate – despite this weeks activities, it’s not just all politics for us you know.
A rather friendly chap called Oswald Hoskyns came to greet us, probably wondering what on earth we wanted, and he went on to explain that they were preparing for the upcoming Annual Isle of Wight Hedgelaying Competition.
