70 Year Old Lightbulb Still Glowing Strong
Thursday, 21st August, 2008 at 8:39 pm, Isle of Wight
We come across some funny old stories on the newswires sometimes, but one that caught our attention in the Telegraph today was the story of a light bulb that is still providing light after being use for 70 years.
The lightbulb can be found at Cowes home of Mo Richardson and apparently has been in use since she was first given it by her late husband’s father in 1938.
According to the article, the light bulb in question is an old Swan Edison filament bulb with hand blown glass and has provided light for approximately 600,000 hours in it’s lifetime.
They tell us that the average for standard light bulbs these days is about 750-1000 hours.
Blimey, they don’t make ‘em like they used to eh? Read the article in full

Very historic, but it’s now time to replace it with a low energy equivalent.

That’s exactly the kind of confused thinking that does nothing to further the public understanding of eco issues.
Each thing that is manufactured requires considerable amounts of resources to create it.
The ‘logic’ of replacing something that is still working with something that has to be made … and replaced time and again when it stops working, is to say the very least distorted.

Strike a light!
A retired electrician from Spalding has discovered one of the oldest working light bulbs in the world.
Roy Fisher (78), of Campbell’s Close, Little London, discovered the light bulb in the cellar of a property he bought in Margate, Kent, 25 years ago and Sotheby’s dated it to the period 1895 to 1905.
Still working after more than a century, the bulb could rival the Livermore Lightbulb in California, believed by the Guinness Book of Records to be the oldest working light bulb in the world, dating back to 1901…
