Thanks to our friends across the Solent for letting us know that Surrey County Council yesterday announced they had formally reached an agreement for Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to use their control centre.

Kay HammondThe deal, worth £1.4 million over five years to the council, will see all Isle of Wight emergency fire calls dealt with at Surrey’s headquarters in Reigate from 4th March.

Kay Hammond (pictured), Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Safety (who you may have heard on the BBC Surrey Radio interview) said, “There are clear benefits to be had through both fire and rescue services working together.”

“Long time drafting this agreement”
“We’ve spent a long time drafting this agreement to ensure it is in the best interests of both Surrey and the Isle of Wight. Safety is always our number one priority and by working together we’ll provide a first class service to the residents of both communities.”

Let’s see if she and Barry Abraham still have smug smiles on their faces the first time we have a fatality as a result of a delayed appliance response from a Surry operator without local knowledge (Niton / Knighton)? Some of us will be watching closely.
