On behalf of the residents of Lake and district I am writing to express our grateful thanks for the good work the Water Company are doing at the base of Lake Hill.
With the days of last summer drifting by we had become sadly resigned to having the entire season pass without a single trench or temporary traffic light appearing to block the shopping centre and thereby promote the annual good natured banter twixt driver and digger, pedestrian and lorry.
We should perhaps have had more faith.
Sure enough, just as all appeared lost, the Water Company appeared to set up camp in what is perhaps the most strategic spot of all.
So now we can, after all, enjoy the joyful chat and laughter of visitor, commuter and local alike as they exchange views and compliments one to another.
Thank you Water Company. You’ve restored our faith in the routines and rhythms of the Island.
Just one criticism if I may – you don’t cause quite enough delay to make it worth while a tea and coffee stall setting up. Perhaps you can take that point more into consideration next time.
In the meantime, thanks once again.
May you never run out of road.
Yours in admiration, Ron Chonner

I can never understand why they don’t put water mains/telephone lines/gas lines under the pavement
Offensive comment?
Because they care far less about car drivers than they do pedestrians?
Why not build some kind of concrete trough with an easily removed lid to carry all of these services? Utopia, eh No5?

“Why not build some kind of concrete trough with an easily removed lid to carry all of these services? Utopia, eh No5?”
Yes, I thought that too. Then I thought how silly it would be to have easily removed lids so that anyone could tamper with or damage the cables and pipes underneath. It would be a utopia for terrorists etc in towns and cities.
Offensive comment?
Terrorists with mobile cranes and invisibility cloaking devices? The lids I visualise would need to be substantial. In areas of concern, the police already seal man-holes,(access covers, for the PC brigade.)

I think Wootton has had more than their fair share of roadworks lately. Selfish b********!!!!!

I note Queens Road in Ryde remains closed today in spite of notices that the work would only take three days.
Argyll Street has resembled on occasions a battlefield as lorries and coaches have had to mount the pavement to crawl past each other.
Offensive comment?
That would be why Southern Vectis started diverting the buses the even longer way around via Ratcliffe Avenue then!
Offensive comment?
Correct Bob.
Southern Vectis buses were struggling to make the tight left turn into West Street.

In fact Clancy Docwra completed their work early on Wednesday morning. The road has remained closed because of Stonehams working, in my view slowly and inefficiently, to the replace the kerb and footpath. The road had to be completely closed while the water connection was being made because the main is right in the middle of the road. I have asked both the County council and Stonehams why the road is still completely closed when the work is confined to one side but have not received an explanation. Since early last evening (Friday)the road has actually been clear as Stonehams finished laying the kerb stones and re-tarmacking the road. I am told that the problem is that authority is required to remove the notices at each end of the road. Apparently there are procedures to go through. I intend to write a full note of my exchanges with the Council and Stonehams (who have failed to explain why it has taken them so long)later this weekend – watch this space

Someone from work was telling me that in order to ensure travellers take full enjoyment from these roadworks, it is impossible to take intelligent avoiding action with there also being roadworks on the alternative routes such as Perowne Way and Adgeston road past the golf club.
Got ya.
Offensive comment?
Surely they are there in solidarity with the ‘Occupy the Wight’ protesters?
Offensive comment?
If we have been able to send can send a man to the moon since 1969,surely we can have easy access to to the cables in Lake main road, without digging the road up everytime?!Maybe the Island is in a technological time warp!
Offensive comment?
PS The same for water and gas mains.
Offensive comment?
What is not perhaps realised is that Lake High Street is an official training ground. Hopeful trench diggers and traffic light manipulaters come from all over the country to practice their trade here. They are all trying for their Grade One Traffic Disruption Certificate.
Offensive comment?
Queens Road remains closed today. The work was supposed to finish on Wednesday.
Argyll Street wedged solid in both directions.
Do utilities get fined for over running road works?
Offensive comment?
If they do, is there any chance us poor motorists get some compensation out of it? Silly question of course!
Offensive comment?
Cross Street in Ryde closed as a hole in the road has appeared.
Wait for it the Council is looking into it
Boom Boom
Offensive comment?
Is it big enough to bury the Council in it???
Offensive comment?
The utilities company actually finished and left the site ahead of schedule, it is Stonehams, the builders, replacing the kerb and footpath on one side only that for some reason needs to have the whole road closed in both directions
