4:15am Wightlink Catamaran Engine Fire

The 4:15am Wightlink Catamaran had a fire in its engine room this morning.

Match alightThe Isle of Wight Fire Brigade was called to Ryde Pier while the craft was still on the water. It was understood that the fire had been put out while coming in.

Firemen with two sets of breathing equipment boarded when it arrived at Ryde Pierhead, going to the engine room to check, and confirmed that it was all OK.

Update: Wightlink sent us the following at 1:59pm in response to our query this morning.

Wightlink can confirm that there was a technical failure on one of the engines onboard Wight Ryder I on her approach into Ryde Pier Head this morning (13 October) on the 0415 sailing from Portsmouth Harbour.

In accordance with Wightlink’s well rehearsed plans, emergency procedures were followed by the crew. As a precaution emergency services were in attendance on arrival and confirmed that no further action was necessary.

The incident and its cause are under full investigation by Wightlink with the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) who were notified once the incident occurred, as is standard procedure.

Wightlink will be operating a revised service for the remainder of today, with sailings departing Portsmouth Harbour at 15 minutes past the hour and from Ryde Pier Head at 47 minutes past the hour (additional sailings will be operated by a charter vessel at 0840; 0940; 1540; 1640; 1740 & 1840 from Portsmouth Harbour and at 0810; 0910; 1010; 1610; 1710 & 1810 from Ryde Pier Head)
