Gill Rogers, Bembridge Parish Council Chair: Surprise Resignation

The Chair of Bembridge Parish Council, Gill Rogers, unexpectedly resigned this afternoon in a letter seen by VentnorBlog.

ResignationIn the letter Gill, who has been an elected councillor for over ten years, says that her “decision has not been made lightly”, questioning the speed of changes that she feels are being made at Bembridge PC.

“Personal reasons”
When VB contacted her, Gill was initially uncertain if she wanted to comment. She later sent VentnorBlog this:

“Because of personal reasons I believe the time is right to stand down. Bembridge Parish Council has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years and it is now time to start relaxing and enjoying those things that matter to me which I have neglected for far too long.

“Bembridge Parish Council has recognised it has to do more for its residents and to promote the village to a wider population and there are many new initiatives coming to the fore. All these initiatives will benefit the village greatly and I am sorry that I was not able to see through my term of office to see the work begin.

“I wish all those councillors who serve Bembridge good luck and would like to thank the Clerk Emma Goldring and Deputy Clerk Jacqui McDade for their support in the past.”

Background
VB has for a while been hearing rumbling of discontent in Bembridge Parish Council over the changes to the level of financial reserves held by the council and proposed disposal of its assets.

We’ve been told that matters have come to a head about a potential fireworks display, particularly as the cost of the display which VB‘s been told would run to £3,000+ for a ten-minute display.

Gill didn’t comment on these.

We contacted Bembridge Parish Council this afternoon for a comment, but haven’t at the time of publishing heard back.
