Donors and supporters of St Catherine’s attended an exhibition of the pupils’ artwork entitled “Who wants a camera?” at Quay Arts last Wednesday (9th March).
For the exhibition, St Catherine’s pupils worked with Island artist Tim Johnson to create sculpted cameras and tripods from recycled and natural materials, along with a related wall piece depicting their responses to the ‘Where are you going?’ theme.
One camera looks to the ancient past depicting dinosaurs while others reflect the pupils’ fascinations with computer gaming, scooter parks, motor racing and other landscape elements.
Learners showed off their talent
A range of representatives from top Island companies including Bestival, Sainsbury’s, Southern Vectis, Wightlink and Waitrose as well the High Sheriff, Peter Kingston and members of the police service enjoyed an opportunity to talk to the young artists at the event.
Guests also learnt about St Catherine’s plans for 2011’s National Year of Communication, entitled Hello. The Hello campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of good communication and the struggles that the one in 10 children in the UK with a communication disability face each and every day.
Grenville Shipley, Principal of St Catherine’s said “It was a wonderful evening and a great opportunity to say thank you to the many individuals and organisations that support us. The children’s artwork is so creative and imaginative, it really impressed our guests.”
