Concessionary Fares Scheme For Disabled Islanders Approved

A delegated decision by Edward Giles will be welcome news for many this afternoon. It will, in the very least, ensure that service users who may have to travel to Freshwater or Ryde when Westminster House is closed down can do so without any extra financial cost.

Concessionary Fares Scheme For Disabled Islanders ApprovedCllr Edward Giles the Cabinet Member for the Environment, Transport and Corporate Services has today approved funding support for the statutory element of the concessionary fares scheme for those with mental health problems, disabilities and those assisting them.

It relates to the scheme valid between 1 April 2011 to 31 March 2012 and in addition to the statutory element, the Isle of Wight council will also fund

  • a) Free bus and rail travel during peak and off peak periods for Island residents suffering severe and enduring mental health problems
  • b) Free bus travel during peak periods for Island residents eligible through disability
  • c) Free bus and rail travel during peak and off peak periods to those assisting eligible Island residents who, through physical disability, would otherwise be unable to access public transport.
  • d) Free rail travel on the Isle of Wight to eligible Island residents only, during off peak travel periods.
