Options For Future Of Military Road Go On Public Display

Last updated:

Here’s a press release from the Isle of Wight council, issued today – Ed.

The Isle of Wight Council is inviting residents to submit comments about the future of the Military Road.

Options For Future Of Military Road Go On Public DisplayA consultation period over a number of options for the coastal road is underway and will end at 1700 on Thursday 26 August.

The options include building a new section of road, maintaining the existing road, diverting traffic and a new bypass for Brook.

Part of Military Road (A3055) was reduced to single lane traffic for safety reasons earlier this year after a number of landslips saw the cliff receding to the edge of the highway.

A number of issues will need to be considered when deciding the future of the road. This includes the ownership of the land and important national conservation policies, high cost, the value of the road to residents and tourists, and future planning issues.

Mobile exhibition
The information will be included in a mobile exhibition which will be on display throughout August at various locations across the Island.

A number of staffed exhibitions will also be held during the consultation period. These will be held at:

Chale Show: 7 and 8 August
Freshwater Bay Car Park: 17 August 1000 – 1600
Compton Bay, National Trust Car Park: 18 August 1000 – 1600
Brook Green: 19 August 1100 – 1900

An unmanned display will also be made available at a number of locations in South and West Wight throughout August.

Each display contains a detailed report into Military Road and gives information behind each suggested option.

Offer to make comments online
Alternatively, comments can be made via the council’s website where there is a full information page on the future of Military Road.

Comments will then be considered by the council as part of its decision making process.
