Island Man Becomes Bishop of Basingstoke

Island Man Becomes Bishop of BasingstokeCongratulations to Peter Hancock, a priest born on the Island, who we hear will soon become the new Bishop of Basingstoke.

Peter has been a priest for some 30 years now, more recently serving as the Archdeacon of the Meon, and has spent almost all of his career in Portsmouth Diocese.

He told Christian Today “Having grown up and worked in the Portsmouth Diocese for so long, it’s a real wrench to leave.

“There are very few churches that I haven’t visited, presided or preached in. When I was ordained 30 years ago, I never imagined that I would end up as a bishop, so it is a real privilege to have this opportunity.”

He will be consecrated as a bishop at St Paul’s Cathedral in September. Best of luck to him in his new role.
