How bonkers is this?

A group of scientists from Holland are planning to gather 44million kg of plastic bottles from the Pacific Ocean and turn them into an island.

Not just any old island, but an Eco Island.

It’s thought the island would be the size of Hawaii and will be created entirely from plastic waste.

Living the true Eco Island dream, the inhabitants of the Island (they reckon about 500,000 people) will benefit from solar and wave power as well as being self sufficient for food.

A spokesperson for the project said “The proposal has three main aims; cleaning our oceans from a gigantic amount of plastic waster; creating new land; and constructing a sustainable habitat. Recycled island seeks the possibilities to recycle the plastic waste on the spot and to recycle it into a floating entity.

“Recycled island should be seen as a unique opportunity to create a new floating habitat from scratch, yet at the same time the ocean is cleaned from a huge part of its plastic pollution.”

If this idea proves feasible then we surely have an answer to some of our coastal erosion.Instead of costly sea walls, reclaim the land with recycled plastic.
