Ventnor Precept to Be Discussed at Town Council Meeting Monday
Monday, 8th February, 2010 at 12:00 pm, Isle of Wight
Town Council, Ventnor, What's On
The agenda for tonight’s Ventnor Town Council (VTC) meeting can now be found online.
Amongst the items being discussed will be the 2010/2011 precept, several matters relating to the Winter Gardens and for the VTC to receive a report from the Audit Recommendations Committee.
Informal precept meeting badly attended
We understand that an informal meeting was called last week for Town Councillors to discuss and agree the precept for this coming financial year.
We’re told that, rather bizarrely, only five councillors turned up for the meeting.
Cllr Perks and Garlick sent their apologies in advance, but there was no word from either Cllr Scoccia, Cllr Mew or Cllr Bartlett.
Current town clerk, Tina Bailey, did not attend as she claimed it would ‘compromise her situation’.
Check the listing for full agenda details.

I had this dream that all the Councillors would respect each other, not drag up old arguments and would make true democratic progress – but then I woke up. Looks like a long evening, suggest pack some sandwiches.

Tina Bailey is absolutely right in not attending any informal meeting of the Town COuncil which was set up to decide the precept. The precept should be decided in full council meetings and appear on an agenda. Members of the public must be able to attend.
It does seem that for many years Ventnor TC have not followed correct procedures and this is still going on. The people of Ventnor should demand that their Town Councillors receive training because it appears that they do not follow the correct procedures. Any precept decision made at informal meetings would be illegal. Why are they also so late in setting the precept? Every other town and parish council set their precepts in December.
