IW Council Chief Executive, Steve Beynon has today (Monday 8 February) issued a written assurance to Mark Chiverton, Unison Branch Secretary, that he is not required to make choice between resignation and standing down as a candidate in the forthcoming general election.
Steve Beynon regrets the period of misunderstanding, despite oral reassurances provided in recent days, and for any distress caused.
Steve Beynon is due to meet with Mark and his regional representative on Tuesday 9 February, the purpose of which is to explore ways in which the Council and Unison can move forward on a number of outstanding issues such as facilities time and car allowances.

Wow in deed. That’s a large slice of humble pie with cream on the side and a topping of blimey sprinkles. Very different to the ‘we didn’t say that’ statement of last week.

Indeed. These councillors have a big mis-understanding of the people….I guess all these people making decisions like parking all have their own drives and allocated parking spaces.

I think we have just witnessed a seminal moment in the history of the ruling council, an apology. Shame it didn’t go as far as to accept responsibility for the many other moments of contempt for employees and the community.
I think they must have taken some serious external advice/pressure to make such an ego denting move as this.
This change of tone should be seen as a small triumph for those concerned and for the wider community. Maybe we will now see a phase of the council responding to the communities needs and opinions, but then again it may merely be a small blip to prevent damnation from the wider Tory party and to prevent the union from causing mayhem at a time when they are trying to force through a very unpopular budget.
What ever the reasons, sincere or not, I think sites like VB have played a major role in the process of accountability. Well done VB, during these difficult times you guys seem right on the money.

For the record, having made an apology this morning, which Mark welcomed and said he wanted to move on, Steve Beynon has now made a further comment to the CP in which he continues to deny Mark’s claims about being told to resign his job if he wasn’t going to resign his candidacy.
You either apologise or you don’t – there is no halfway house.

As the restated denial has now been removed from the CP website, we now have a proper apology, again!!!

‘misunderstanding’ sounds like a weasel word to me. There was no misunderstanding – Beynon made a huge mistake. At leaset he’s righted the wrong. Perhaps he’ll offer Mark some compansation? Pay for a good dinner or something.
My guess is the apology was as a result of real pressure. The pressure of A/ Being wrong B/ Knowing every single Union member and every right thinking IW resident was behind Chiverton!
